District 9
« on: August 22, 2009, 07:23:48 PM »

So I'm still trying to decide it I liked it.  Definitely a very well made movie, but disturbing.  It really is a psychological action movie.  Some disturbing torture, action scenes were decent but not mind blowing.  The characters were very real...but afterwards we all felt we needed to go find a happy movie...

All in all 7.5/10

Very disappointed with this one, everyone is raving that its one of the best movies of the decade and although the special effects were freaking amazing there were so many contrivances, plot holes, and unbelievable coincidences that so much just felt lazy.  I'm not someone who needs to have every single thing explained, I get the idea that some questions need to be answered by our imaginations, but there were also a number of occurances that simply defied any logical explanation.  I am very impressed that it only had a 30 million dollar budget though, hell, the Hangover had over 35 million!

I figured this would be a techy, SciFi fan sort of thing (like the Matrix) but I've had quite a few friends (non-geek) say they really enjoyed it. I don't go to the theaters much, but I'm pondering going to see this one.

I agree with PJ. I liked it, but it wasn't quite what I expected. The whole plot was just a little over-the-top and lacking any subtlety. It was a good concept, the effects were well-done, it was exciting, but the story could have been much, much better. I would have preferred the Halo movie because it could have delivered at least as much, and maybe would have had a better storyline.

def not the best movie of the decade - but I liked it. A lot. I gues that is because my expectations were pretty low to being with. I think that it was a brilliant idea to have the setting be South Africa instead of a big US city. Do you guys think ending leaves things open for part 2?

Yes, but I don't think I want there to be a part 2. I enjoyed the movie, but I feel a lot can be done wrong with a sequel. Not that that's stopped filmmakers yet.

I watched this on a plane. I was expecting typical alien invation movie, but I was pleasantly surprised, it was actually a really interesting concept for a movie.

I watched it the other weekend. While the effects were fantastic, I can't say I was really brought in by the story line. It was very long for very little plot. The movie as a whole did not live up to my expectations.

I finally joined the bandwagon and signed up for netflix last week, this was my first movie I received in the mail.

I wasn't sure what to expect, having seen no previews for it and only really see you guys' reviews that it was so-so.  In the end I really liked it because it was not what I was envisioning.  I didn't see any glaring plot holes that hurt the movie. I give it an 8/10. I wouldn't buy it and, I'm glad I didn't spend money to see it in the theater but I'm very glad I saw it.
