Tool advice
« on: February 15, 2011, 11:56:51 AM »
Wasn't sure where else to put this, so here we go.  I'm going to be doing some minor projects around the house soon which will involve some small-end wood working (building a train table, removing and restoring some molding, and some other stuff) and I was considering buying a brad/finish nail gun.  I don't have an air compressor so I was considering going the electric route to avoid worrying about filling up canisters and stuff.

I was looking at this at Lowes: Nail Gun

I realize that's not electric but I'm worried that the electric ones aren't as powerful or that they don't hold up well?  I have oak moulding so it would need to have some punch.  And if I went the air powered route, is the compressor a must or can I get away with the CO2 tanks for these small projects?  I mean, one of those CO2 tanks is a third of the cost of a small compressor:
Compressor

But then does it make sense to just buy a kit with both?  kit

Help!   :dunno:

Nevermind... bought that.  TONS of good reviews that fall in line with what I'm looking for.  Fuck I'm so impatient.  By the way, if anyone else is interested, you get 15% off through today plus they gave me $5 for some other deal and I found the coupon code 'sears2011' for another $5 off.  Total price was $64 after taxes with a local pickup.  FUCKING SWEET.  :D

I'm really, really not a fan of any nail gun that isn't compressor. But for small projects once in a while, might not be so bad.

I like the gunpowder based nail guns.  They work in concrete.  Oh and by the way...fuck nails.  Use screws.  Nails always eventually fail unless they are only holding things together long enough for the glue to set.

I totally thought of that the second i started reading this thread lmao

@knuck: nobody uses screws for molding. The problem with screws in some woods like that is the act of drilling in the screw can/would split it

Hence the brad nailer.  Bigger head to hold things together.  And I would never use screws on the stuff I'm working on.

True.  Though pre-drilling will eliminate such things.

Even still, who wants to see screws in molding?

Picked it up tonight... unfortunately I got home after the kids were in bed so I couldn't really hook it up and shoot shit with it.  I'll post a review after my projects are done.
