My Next Laptop
« on: August 08, 2012, 12:46:10 PM »
Finally!  An ultrabook that competes on spec with MacBook Air, has a reasonable screen for working on, and fantastic input devices!

If The Verge's review holds up to these, I seriously will consider buying one of these on launch day.  I'll probably skip the 3G option, but I haven't decided on processor or HD yet.  If I get the 250, I can probably get most of the media collection I use day to day onto it...and thus effectively replace my current laptop for everything except gaming (new one won't have games - or will have a minimal number....

Just wish there was an option for more than 4GB of ram

Why not just buy the macbook air, which comes with full disk encryption out-of-the-box?

I'm a Windows guy....and, more importantly, I tend to find MS Office works better in Windows...and since I spend about 90% of my work time in Office....

Open Office (or Libre Office)

Problem solved, no comparability issues.

Yea - no.  It's not compatibility, it's features and interface.  Granted I haven't tried Open Office in several years...but I'm pretty sure I need more polish than that.  Most importantly - I need a fully functioning Excel, and I recall - the Open Office version isn't to kind to Excel's higher level features.  I also need fully compatible commenting and track changes....not sure if Open Office has that.....I also have my dissertation written with a citation manager that appears to support Open Office, but it's tricky enough in Word....

The MS office suite for mac is good, I like the interface better than the windows version (although my opinion could be biased being a mac user).

You need to try a new version.

I don't get into Excel much so I was guessing there. It has been great for me with everything from the college so i figured maybe it had progressed since your last usage. Libre Office is essentially the same thing but there are some differences. You may try that as well just to see.

Perspective - I'm just not quite ready to make that much of a change lol....plus I'm not sold on the new document handling system...What do you think?  I know it's very iCloud based...and I also know that I can't allow any of my confidential stuff to be uploaded to iCloud....

You have to enable iCloud to use it, I'm not using it right now, mostly because I havent had a chance to read up on it.

Duplicate thing? I use my mac just like a regular computer. No backups other than what I do manually to an external HD (although you can use Time Machine to auto-backup to an external HD if you want). No cloud synching, no duplicating any files. Just me and my hard drive.

I like this one. This one definitely goes on my list of possible next computers. Then I could get rid of my little netbook and my 14" latitude for one combo unit. Slap Linux on that bad boy and you're set (and upgrade the RAM).
