Hope everybody is up for this again.

That's right, Football season is almost here...

P.S. I have Brady and Rodgers and don't want both. I'll trade one for a great running back or maybe for a good player and a draft pick.

I already proposed a trade with kermi.

I'm open to the trade, but I'm not ready to pull the trigger on it - we're like a month before I'm set to thinking about this one...

Count me out :( I don't think I'll have time for this with the baby coming soon :p

You can't be counted out of a keeper league... it's a keeper league!!

Just do your best, and if you suck then you'll get a good draft pick next year. Besides, with a new baby coming you'll want something to occupy your time once or twice a week for 5 minutes.

is there a way in SMF to ignore a thread?
like if I'm not interested in the keeper league but don't want to keep seeing this thread pop up over and over again from now 'till November?

Check that - No.  Not for AP.  For another guy I may do it, but not AP....he's a #1 pick...

Ok, but Brady might be considered a #1 by some as well.

I might consider throwing in a pick.

They'd be wrong.

I don't have a QB in my 1st Rd period...
Title: Re: FF Keeper 09
Post by: charlie on August 03, 2009, 02:52:59 AM
They'd be wrong.

Right, because easily being the highest scoring player in our league last time he played a season isn't enough to be a first round pick. Good luck with that. ;)
Title: Re: FF Keeper 09

No because the point differential between top QBs and secondardy QBs is much less than the differential between top RBs and second level RBs.

Title: Re: FF Keeper 09

No because the point differential between top QBs and secondardy QBs is much less than the differential between top RBs and second level RBs.

Perhaps, but I'm not sure that's what happened last year.

Difference in points 2008

QB#1 - QB#5: 60pts
RB#1 - RB#5: 50pts

QB#1 - QB#9: 125pts
RB#1 - RB#17: 112pts

QB#3 - QB#9: 74pts
RB#3 - RB#17: 65pts

QB#1 - QB#12: 145pts
RB#1 - RB#28: 158pts

QB#3 - QB#12: 95pts
RB#3 - RB#28: 111pts

Yeah, QB's vs RB's debate might be shifting to the QB's now that the league has gone pass wacky and so many teams are platooning running backs.

I could use a good RB...if someone would like someone from my roster let me know!

Unfortunately we only get two keepers, so it will be hard to find someone with two keepable running backs that is willing to give one up. You'll probably have to wait for the draft. (Then again, if someone has three keepable players, you might be able to trade them a draft pick... that would probably work out well. I'd consider giving you Westbrook for a high draft pick.)

By the way, thanks for sticking with the league.

We're allowed to change keepers, right?
Title: Re: FF Keeper 09
Post by: charlie on August 18, 2009, 02:03:04 PM
Yup.

In fact, everybody should adjust their keepers if they haven't already. I don't know when the deadline is, but I wouldn't wait until the day of the draft.

I know PJ and axon only have one keeper set, and a few other people probably want to change theirs.

I'm leaning towards keeping Turner/Fitzgerald this year so anybody interested in trading a draft pick for Frank Gore? He's a first round draft pick and somebody here can get solid value for him if they don't have 2 decent keepers.

Title: Re: FF Keeper 09

Try dropping the player first before accepting the trade. Maybe that's what charlie/kermi3 did for their trade.

And crap, I completely forgot how shitty my team from last year was, the only obvious player to keep is Lynch and he's suspended the first three games

I'm totally up for trading a draft pick for keeper worthy players if anyone is interested.

I'll consider your trade when I have a little more time cshot, weekend at the latest.  And Kermi, rejected your trade, not going to give up my first overall pick for anyone a team was going to drop anyways since I could just use my first pick on them, a trade only limits my options and helps one of you guys out for no good reason ;)
Title: Re: FF Keeper 09
Post by: kermi3 on August 20, 2009, 02:35:08 PM
hehe - thought I'd give that one a shot - didn't realize you were first overall...I'd do the same for a 2nd Rd - not a 3rd though, you have the remarkable knack of grabbing guys just before I pick them - the fewer times I have to pick after you the better ;-)
Title: Re: FF Keeper 09
Post by: PJYelton on August 20, 2009, 11:29:13 PM
Ok, I want to do both of your trades, I pick my 2nd and 3rd rounds back to back so they are essentially the same pick but one of you will get the ever so slight advantage here.  I think Jackson is just a little better than Gore so I say I give 2nd to Kermi and 3rd to Cshot.  You guys cool with that?

:EDIT, just noticed cshot included a low round pick in his trade, we have a winner!  Kermi, you want the deal for the very next pick?

Also, how do we give cheez's team to my brother?  Commish thing or does cheez need to do something on his end?

I really like how the scoring is setup for defense in the non keeper league, 10 points for shutout, 5 points for allowing 1-6 points, 3 for allowing 7-10 points, -3 for 28-34 and -5 for 35+.

Anyone mind if we use the same rule here?

Title: Re: FF Keeper 09
Post by: PJYelton on September 02, 2009, 03:27:37 PM
One problem with having them back to back is its difficult to know how long a draft will take to complete, sometimes they are real quick and other times they take forever with people always taking the maximum amount of time.  But I'm open for same night, or really anytime to be honest.

Title: Re: FF Keeper 09
Post by: PJYelton on September 03, 2009, 02:09:28 PM
Ok, we need to decide quickly here since its still scheduled for tomorrow night.  The non-keeper is at 5PT/8ET Sunday, we can do 6:30PT/9:30ET or 3:30PT/6:30ET on Sunday for this league or do a different time like say monday or tuesday night.  Everyone put in your vote with what you want to do asap so we can reschedule before its too late.

I'm figuring an hour and a half for drafting, don't know if thats accurate, but if it isn't I'm sure we can handle drafting in both leagues at the same time for a few minutes.

sunday 6:30 ET (this would have less overlap with the non-keeper because the 8 team draft should go much faster)
sunday 9:30 ET

Does the commissioner have power to set keepers for other teams? I don't know if axon's going to be available to access his team, and he only has one keeper set.

I feel guilty now that I traded him Westbrook. He was ranked a lot higher at the time of the trade.

Do it.

And I propose that in honor of the new dad, if Ax can't make it - we all agree to try not to draft Westbrook until the computer grabs it for him.  Anyone who breaks the rule has to wear the avatar of RoD's choice for the duration of the season.

I'm 100% ok with that, however, if anyone else doesn't show up he might get autodrafted... but I think I can fix that after the fact.

Ok, I can't force a trade between Jen and Axon, best I can do is force them both to drop a player.  You two will need to do it yourselves, I believe the trade should be for Ronnie Brown since that was the next pick made after Jen nabbed Westbrook.

I kinda liked the decision....You really want to give Peyton 2 minutes even with the length of the field?  I'd do that about as quickly as I'd give it to Brady or Ben.

That first would have won the game - and they were damn close to getting it - if they didn't.

BTW - I'm going to LOVE winning with one of the bottom 2 or 3 scores this week...talk about not deserving it...

I like the idea of going for it much more often than most teams do, but at the 28 yard line maybe not so much, and at the end of the game, the 30-40 yards from a punt could make a big difference.
Title: Re: FF Keeper 09
Post by: Govtcheez on November 16, 2009, 02:02:56 PM
Yeah I think that coaches tend to be too cautious on 4th down, but that is probably a situation where they should have punted.  The risk of giving Peyton effing Manning the ball on your own 30 when he's only down a TD is pretty crazy.

I think given the opposing offense, the extra 30-40 yards wouldn't have been much help - especially compared to the risk that the Pats high powered offense couldn't gain 1 yard...

Did the Colts score on every possession that game? I didn't watch, but I assume they didn't. Forcing someone to go 65 yards instead of 28 (when they need a touchdown) raises the likelihood of stopping them by quite a bit.

I just made up some numbers and it seems like it could go either way.

Chances of stopping Colts TD from 28 yards away: 35%
Chances of stopping Colts TD from 65 yards away: 70%
Chances of making it on 4th down: 50%

Likelihood of victory after going for it: 67.5%
Likelihood of victory after punting: 70%

(Note: I fudged the numbers a bit, my initial thoughts had the "go for it" option the clear winner.)
Title: Re: FF Keeper 09
Post by: Govtcheez on November 16, 2009, 04:57:15 PM
It'd be cool to actually figure out the numbers instead of just making them up.  The excessive stats is one of the reasons I like baseball more than the NFL

Indy had 14 possessions and scored on 5 of them.  The only possession they had that started in NE territory was the result of the 4th down play.  All of their other scoring drives were at least 79 yards..  That means that NE was successful at stopping  them on long drives 69% of the time in this game (so your made up number is pretty good).

Obviously they were successful in stopping short drives 0% of the time, but it'd be sweet to see a very large sample size.
Title: Re: FF Keeper 09
Post by: charlie on November 16, 2009, 05:05:58 PM
538 linked to a study of whether to go for it on 4th down or not, but it was pretty dry and based on first quarter scenarios. Still, it might have the numbers. Also, the TMQ guy on ESPN.com always talks about it and has linked to studies, I'm sure he'll defend the decision in tomorrow's column (which I don't really read anymore).

I think the study linked by 538 said that 4th and 2 succeeds about 3 out of 7 tries. I'd imagine it would be higher for New England, which is why I bumped it to 50%, but it's hard to say how much higher. I'd look at the percentages of success on 3rd and 2 since the scenario there is usually the same.
Title: Re: FF Keeper 09
Post by: micah on November 16, 2009, 05:07:03 PM
my numbers, based on what I'm guessing Belichick was thinking...

Chances of stopping Colts TD from 28 yards away: 0%
Chances of stopping Colts TD from 65 yards away: 10%
Chances of making it on 4th down: 75%

Likelihood of victory after going for it: 75%
Likelihood of victory after punting: 10%

you can't argue with those statistics that I made up.  I think he made the right call at the time.

Ha... I would hope that if that's what Belichick thinks he posts it in his locker room so his defense can be motivated. Oh, and sorry for your loss, micah. ;)

Of course 538 would do something like that.  Is that site still worth reading?
I still like to read it, it's actually one of the few sites I go to every day. They have several extra people posting entries occasionally, but I tend to skip those unless I have some time. I like Silver's analysis because it tends to go more to the heart of issues rather than the current media narratives. For example, he's been posting a lot on health care, and so some things sound like surprises in the main stream media but are pretty close to what he predicts in the blog. I heard about the opt-out idea from him well before it became big news as a potential compromise, and I think many think the narrow passage of the health care bill was a bad thing for democrats, but months ago he predicted (based on stats) that it would pass with about the same margin as it did.

Instead of looking at the entire game though you could just look at the fourth quarter, there Indy was successful on 2 of 3 possessions before the 4th down decision, both were 80 yards and both took less than 2 minutes.
Title: Re: FF Keeper 09
Post by: charlie on November 16, 2009, 07:13:49 PM
But why would you limit your sample size like that. Maybe adjust the number a bit if you think the team is tired or the Colts are getting better, but just because they were able to do two quick long drives in a row doesn't mean they'd do it again, especially if you employ some sort of prevent.
Title: Re: FF Keeper 09
Post by: PJYelton on November 16, 2009, 07:58:03 PM
Why NOT limit the sample size?  The fourth quarter is very different than the first three quarters, by then the teams have had a chance to figure out whats working and what isn't working, plus like you said defenses are usually tired at that point.  It would be like giving the raiders a 70% chance to beat the Bengals this next week simply because they hold a 2-1 advantage over them all time.

Not saying 66% is the right percentage they would have scored, just saying I think its definately higher than 30%.
Title: Re: FF Keeper 09
Post by: charlie on November 16, 2009, 08:42:33 PM
Well, yeah, I said you could adjust the number a little bit. But there isn't a whole lot of reason to only look at the last three. All it takes is one fumble and the percentage goes down to 33% (which is why you don't look at such a small sample size).

Maybe if you had some evidence that the odds consistently change in the fourth quarter for all teams, then it might be wiser to add a lot of emphasis to the last few drives, but otherwise I would think the emphasis there shouldn't be too big.

http://belichick-decision.heroku.com/

Ha! thats hilarious, good find  :D

its still not accurate though, it presumes that if the Pats made the first down they would have won the game.  But they were out of time outs and there was two minutes to kill.  The likelihood of a win would be huge, but not 100%

Also, I'd like to amend my previous thoughts that implied Belichick has no faith in his defense.  I still think that whether the colts have 30 yards or 99 yards to go, the result of the game would be the same.  (a) They'd either have a big drive or short drive to score OR (b) The Patriots defense would have to stop them in 4 downs.

Maybe, in scenario b, Belichick had TOO MUCH faith in his defense and thought, "Hell, we can give them the ball on the 28 yard line and stop them on the 28 yard line"

Wow, good for him.  I haven't been paying a ton of attention to him since I can really only watch half of their games but it never seems like his stats are anything special.

Wait, 747 yards and only 4 TDs is middle of the pack in the league?  Those seem like the kind of stats you'd see from a RB that's being platooned, not a featured back

And another 415 receiving yards along with 1 TD.

Good game there Charlie, couldn't come back from that monster Thursday you had.

Thanks! I was sweating it, but only a bit. In the semifinals of another league I had a similar early lead, but it all got whittled away and the Giants D did me in Monday. I'm hoping a win in this league will make up for the disappointment.

My team was really horrible in this league this season. Hopefully next year it'll be a tad bit better.

You were a bit busy at draft time - we won't mock you this year...how is the little guy?

hanks, and thanks :) he is growing like a weed. Just over 18lbs at 4 months....and looooooong. He is really a great kid - nothing like the horror stories we've heard from new parents - sure, he keeps us up at night, but that's because he eats very often.

I might pass this year.

I might pass this year.

You can't. It's a keeper. Unless you're a puss like Govtcheez. Just let your team play out and accumulate draft picks.

Besides you've got the first pick this year.

PJ, are you running this one again this year?  I made you co-commish last year and I think you ran it.

What is a good draft date for everyone?  I can't do it on the 24th since I have another draft that night.

Also, I'd prefer after 8PM EST if possible, 8:30 preferrably.

I'm fine with any weekday draft time since I'd either be at work or at home. Whether I can make whatever gets picked or not I'll probably have to wait til the day of to know.

Yes, I can run this one again.  Everybody needs to make sure they set the players they want to keep, I can't remember when the league drops everyone off your team.

Ok, so far we have confirmation from myself, Kermi, Charlie, Ober, and my brother.  Just missing Cshot, Jen, and Axon.

Count me in. I'd prefer a later draft time since I'm PST time

Doing before the 31st will be a bit tough for me (I also can't do the 2nd).  I'm in otherwise...

Draft is currently set for 9/6 at 9pm eastern.  Any problems let me know while there is still time to change it.
