Moving Servers
« on: April 28, 2005, 01:02:01 PM »
I've got the new FTP info for the new server, and I'm starting the process of moving all the data right now.  I know this place has been lagging a lot and giving timeouts, but it's going to get worse while I make the transfer.  I may end up shutting the board off when I make the full move, just so we don't lose any threads.

But, in the meantime, I'm in the process of moving everything.  Just hold on tight.

Thanks for the update ober.  Shutting down the boards sounds like a good idea, I think I can live with out entropysink for a few hours. :)

My Opinion:
Move the files
Shut the board down
Do anything needed to point to the new server
Do a backup of the db
Copy over the db info
Open the new forums

Of course thats assuming the mysql is on the localhost.  If its not then its even easier :)

Here's my plan:

I really hope I don't have to go through the setup of the board again, because I plan to just copy the config files and do an export/import of the entire database structure.

This partly sucks because I have to download all the files for all the styles and then put them back up on the new server.

I also have to download all the member info and upload all that to the new server as well... but that can come after I restart the new forums.

I may have to shut the place down later this afternoon and bring it up again tomorrow when I'm finished (could be most of the day).

I say backup the DB before you do anything else.

Good luck Oby!
Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Take your time, Ober, and don't worry - I'm sure it'll all work out okay.

If it doesn't we'll just blame whoever the last member to register was. ;)

Reasoning:
-- Main goal is to make everything as smooth as possible --
The files themselves aren't going to change so you can just copy them over and they are ready to go

Make any DNS changes here because well it's gonna take a bit for it to propagate so you want to give it as much time as possible.

Close this forum and he database now will not change.  If you backup prior to this point you'll run the risk of losing data.

Restore db on the new server and reopen.

You keep this one closed and eventually everyone will move over.

This is the one time where allowing remote MySQL connection really helps as you can do the move only closing the forum long enough to move the database and then you can reopen both locations.

Well, we've run into another minor glitch... it appears that phpmyadmin isn't setup properly at the moment on the new server.  I'm seeing someone else's blog and comments tables.

And it's taking fucking forever to grab the data off of the old server because it keeps timing out.

Off their game?  Fuck, they don't even have a game.

EDIT: I should clarify... it's not the host I'm complaining about... it's the server we're currently on.  The new server that I'm uploading to is great.  Works like a charm.

The hosting people are awesome and have even refunded us $20 for the downtime... which works out to a little more than 2 free months of hosting.

You know IMO moving data from one server to another should be the host's job not the clients.....

It is, and they know that... however the transfer ability on the server we're on is busted.  They've completely moved my 3 other clients that I have hosted with them.
