Night Shift....
« on: May 02, 2005, 01:30:22 PM »
Ive been working at the same place for the past 5 summers, but this year Ill be working the night shift... 4:30pm to 3:30am.  Ive never been one of those students staying up late nights to get stuff finished.  Ive been up past 3:30 only a handful of times.  This first week is going to be rough!

Has anyone every worked night shift?  Any advice would be appreciated :)

Yeah, I've worked 12 hour nights before, but only for short periods. Treat it just like working normally - go to bed x hours after you get home etc. You soon acclimatise (sp?).

If you have weekends off, that makes life tricky. It's difficult to know whether to stay in the sleep rhythms or not.

I forgot to mention that, I have Fridays off and weekends as well. I just dont see how I will have time to do anything during the day, it seems like I will wake up, have a few hours, then have to go back to work.

I tried to sleep as much as I could today, since I know it will be a long night.

Hopefully I will be able to get into a good sleeping rhythm quickly.

I've worked nightshifts as a security guard one summer...it was kind-of tough because my body was not used to it at all at the time. Even though I got enough sleep during the day, I still was short on energy. My advice is to try getting a day or evening shift.

Well I tried to sleep as much as I could during the day, and I made it through my first shift.  Im not used to standing up for so long, my legs are absolutely killing me, but I should be fine after a week.. I hope

God that isn't even night shift, that like late shift...we used to 9 - 9 at my old work, was actually much more fun than being on during the day!

Just relax into it, Canuck - you'll soon adjust so don't worry about sleeping patterns.

As an aside, here's a sleep profiler to while away a few minutes.

I only got an 81, but they seemed to be happy with that.
