Hey... I have an idea, why don't we just take away the rights of everyone?

That doesn't seem too bad to me. It criminalizes the people who actually are violating the copyrights, but allows parents to use filtering tech on their DVD players.

Not that I necessarily agree with filtering, but I don't see a problem with it. It's hardly a copyright violation.

Also, the part at the end talking about authorizing the Library of Congress to save more works seems pretty A-OK to me.

Maybe I'm not getting something, but my indignation alarm isn't going off.

Yeah...at first I thought, "How dare them!"  However, if I fast-forward through a part of the movie, I'm not altering anyone's property.  Hollywood can't dictate to me how I will watch a movie.  This one feels okay to me.

i see what the hollywood companies are complaining about since it probably is a violation of copyright, but i never really agreed with that part of copyright law to begin with. copyright law was meant to give ownership to a work to someone and allow them to protect it. cutting out the parts of a movie a person doesn't want to watch isn't really a violation of the spirit of copyright. you might as well ban pieces of papers with numbers dictating where swearing occurs since that's pretty much the illegal idea behind dvd filtering.

like ken said, i don't really agree with the sanitation of television and movies, even when it's legal. i don't understand whose rights are being infringed upon (except maybe the movie companies... but anything that softens their grip on copyright law is ok for me.)

I think what they're upset about is that other people (the sanitizers) are making money off of their work. I don't think they'd have this problem if they made "cleaner" versions of their work (just like music artists do). I assume they still have to pay royalties or something?
I don't see a big problem with it. If anything it gives more rights to the consumer.
Damn the man, save the empire!

It's changing a copywritten movie and releasing the movie under the original title.  How is it not copyright violation?

If I took Snow White and spliced in a scat porn halfway in, you think Disney would be pissed?

Way to read the article  . It makes that illegal, but legalizes programs that let DVD players skip over racy content.

Hmm, now maybe its just me but I think most of the civilised worlds problems with sex - teenage pregnancy, STD's, and general unopen-ness about it - are related to a lack of information on the subject. Why such tabboo, its probably the most natural thing you can do, it is the most amazing experience for all involved. Now considering how little is in films you'd allow you children to watch why go the extra step to get rid of even that? I dunno, crazy ultra conservitive yanks...
