You can almost think of it as a computer or telephone network with very few decision making points :P

strange. you would think that they would want to do it a shorter, easier, more cost effective way

I imagine that the cost of shipping might be less then the cost of creating a lot of processing centers.  I dunno though.  My only time working in shipping was dealing with packages that couldn't be delivered, not with coming up with the control methods.

I wonder how much of it has to do with weight also?  I.E.:  The full desktop from dell might get some more focused attention then the 1oz package.

Though I do recall that every night there was a plane and truck that left.  IIRC the truck went to Fresno but I have no idea where the plane went.  I imagine the plane went to the opposite coast while the fresno truck dealt with packages staying in this region or going to Asia.
