You guys (Americans) are in the Confederations Cup Final and yesterday beat about the best side in the world, and yet no comments?

No.

But seriously, does this fixture even register over in the US? The rest of the world watches and competes in this game and the US side did very well in the last couple of games

They played well - I only got to see the second half, but it was nice to see some success finally.  I'll definitely be watching Sunday.

(I didn't think they'd win a single game)

The confed cup was done with each team being placed into a group of 4, with 3 games being played in the group stage.  The top two from each group moved on to the semis, which were the games yesterday and today.  The final and third place games are this weekend

I was happy to see they won.

I'm still a bit confused, though, as I haven't been paying much attention. I thought there was some world cup qualifying going on or something. Is that the case, or is this just a tune-up tournament or something. I'd thought I'd heard the U.S. was endanger of not qualifying (like Iran was), but then I find out they're in the finals.

We made it through the group stage on the third tiebreaker or something like that (tied for points, tied for goals for,won on goal differential by a goal because we beat Egypt 3-0 AND Brazil beat Italy 3-0).  We aren't in any danger of not qualifying for the WC.

Were we in danger before we won that tiebreaker?

Not really.  It was (is) in the realm of possibility, but very unlikely.  Our group sucks and we are clearly the best of the bunch.
