Title: game not recognizing directx
Post by: ober on October 02, 2008, 11:11:43 PM
So I tried to install a game tonight (Madden 08) and the fucker keeps telling me that it can't find Directx 9.0c.  I even went and downloaded directx 10 and it still said it.  dxdiag even says it's 9.0c so WTF?

Anyone ever run into this?
Title: Re: game not recognizing directx
Post by: Steve on October 02, 2008, 11:17:24 PM
got any errors in dxdiag?

Also if you installed 10, why does it say 9.0c? And FYI if you truely have 10 installed, some games that use 9.x wont work because the framework changed a bit for 10.

Also IIRC your using XP, and you cant just install 10 on XP. You need one of the slightly modified installers to install DX10 on XP.

Your fix is only a endaround a larger problem. It bypass's a games auto detection of DX which is fine if the issue is not fatal to the game. Being that he is giving different versions, one of which is technically not compatible with xp in its own right, im betting its a larger problem.

tho im guessing its xp, i know obe is one of those who spoke in vistas favor when i did so i may be off there.

Sorry, didn't think you guys would respond so quick.  I'll try your suggestion again tonight ethic, and yes, it's only a Madden problem.  And I ended up going back to install 9.0c again.  And I'm on XP SP3.  I have Vista on my work laptop.

Any errors in dxdiag? Also have you tried re-installing the .net framework?

and if that doesn't work, listen to RoD even though he's
wrong.

Your first suggestion was a shot in the dark. Your last two arent even going to do anything. Stand back son, the grownups are working.

Ok, I tried several of the new suggestions... one of which I can't because I'm installing from an image.

Seriously... WTF.  I even installed the version with the game.

No DXDIAG errors, it says 9.0c is installed.  Do I need to restart after installing that, because it doesn't tell me to?!
Title: Re: game not recognizing directx
Post by: Steve on October 05, 2008, 10:31:16 PM
did you try the .net framework reinstall? And yea you *should* restart.

I'm starting to think it may be the image, have you tried it on another machine for kicks? If dxdiag is clean, the version is current, and the framework is installed properly then it is not a dx issue.

Post by: ober on October 05, 2008, 10:37:09 PM
Everyone else seems to bitch about the error I get as well.  It's not the image... has to be a conflict somewhere else.

hmm....sounds like a biggy fukin game. I'm trying to remember but isnt there a "diagnostic" mode that DX can run in? god i hate DX

By the way, I also uninstalled .NET 1 and 2 and installed 3.5... no change.

why not? if its an image mount it and copy the files to the local disk
Title: Re: game not recognizing directx

It's already on the HD...... ?

WTF, I'll copy it to another partition.
Title: Re: game not recognizing directx
Post by: Steve on October 05, 2008, 11:29:57 PM
Well yea its on the drive, but its mounted if its an image, and running as a virtual drive. Copying those files into an actual folder allows u to run it without it being through a virtual mount. thus allowing u to try ethics compatability theory.

video drivers wont affect dx detection.

Completely remove DX. Disable auto updates, reboot.

Download fresh copy of DX from ms, install.

reboot, try again.

That file doesn't exist.  There is an autorun.ini file but it didn't have anything about the DX version.

And RoD... how do you uninstall directx?  It's not listed in Add/Remove.

If the issue is not contained to ober (it appears to be a major game flaw) then that would be a waste of money.

I'll admit consoles have more games then PCs.  Of course 95% of the console games suck complete ass so it evens itself out.
Title: Re: game not recognizing directx
Post by: Steve on October 06, 2008, 04:49:17 PM
Okay. Dying, then.

btw, I just found out that this is an ILLEGAL PIRATED VERSION
of Madden and I will NOT BE party to contributing to the further
demise of the PC Gaming Industry!

How do you know its not legal? I have a ton of images of my favorite games i own legally. Images dont wear like cd's do.

And its not dying. Its still growing.

Post by: Steve on October 06, 2008, 04:59:11 PM
Woah bro, piracy is just as bad on the console. In alot of cases its easier. There was a game i pirated a few months ago, a copy for the pc for me and a xbox360 version for my buddy (the one i chipped). His worked perfect first try, took me a week of dicking around to get my pc copy working.

Now dxdiag is saying I have 8.1 installed, even though I installed 9.0c.  It's also saying I have registry errors (see attached).

Now what?  I think the PC is stable again... hopefully :(
Title: Re: game not recognizing directx

It says direct3d isn't available now... what gives?  I tried installing directx again and it didn't change anything.

Sorry working on a forum.

The core must be 8.x....somehting with your comp is really screwy man. your doing everything right, the installer/os is the issue. Its not updating and removing files and reg entries like it should...if its stable and everything is working right except this game id walk away.

Otherwise...fuck it dude wipe it out, clean install of xp and 9.0c

I'm now at 9.0b... now I have to figure out how to get to c.  I'm tempted to reinstall but I'm about back to normal now.

Obes.  I have been watching this.  I didn't have an answer that could help.  I had this issue (or similar) before we moved into the new house and had to reinstall XP to get everything functional again.  I was hoping you guys would find the solution that Randy and I couldn't.  :(

I also went through a similar nightmare with Quake once too (not DirectX).  It just wouldn't recognize the reality that was installed on the machine.

I know.... :wall:

Title: Re: game not recognizing directx

um, what? My advice is/was solid, show me where its not? Windows isnt the most predictable thing ever. I used these methods plenty of times with no adverse effects, but if a computer has issues and is running on Windows nobody knows what is going to happen.

How many times have you been working on a windows box and had it do something you werent expecting while performing routine tasks or corrections?
