Suits and suit coat pricing is generally indicative of quality, feel, and comfort.  Now with that out there, finding a good site or (better) local business with vintage products can save you big $ and still set you up in a fine quality product.

If I ever get my freaking weight stabilized again, I need a really nice casual sports jacket.  I prefer wool products year round due to their ability to breathe and stabilize temperature better than any other material I am aware of.  Wool also rarely wrinkles, does not promote odors, feels great in that it drapes well, lasts generations, and it is tough.  I now wear wool socks all the time.  I picked up a wool vest from Filson a few years back.  Best wardrobe purchase I have made in years.  Winter, spring and fall I am rarely without it.

Check wool products out!  It isn't the itchy stuff you remember.

Wool products are like any other in that there are good and not so good grades and brands.  Read reviews.

+1 to what knuck said.

Wool rules. I have also been wearing wool socks all the time year round for the past 3 or 4 years. Filson makes awesome products that you will be able to wear forever. This coat is my next purchase: https://www.filson.com/extra-long-double-mackinaw-cruiser.html#sku=11010042-fco-000000588

I like the idea of the sports jacket, I kinda think I could pull it off.  Just need to figure out what looks good. In the past I've tried a navy blue jacket over khakis and I looked like I was on my way to the yacht club.  I think I need to try patterns or heavier (non-suit-like) materials.  Whenever I google current fashion trends I end up on GQ or some other site showing people who look ridiculous wearing $400 coats.

on the plus side, I can wear a 52-regular off the rack without tailoring.

I tried Macy's and similar big box stores and they were no help. But for the past two years I get my jackets and suits at http://www.destinationxl.com They have tailors on staff and usually turn stuff around within a day. The one by my house has some awesome people working there - very very helpful. You should check them out

The jacket I bought a couple weeks ago before my interview was from there actually.  It was the first time I'd been there. I actually went because I was looking for a shirt. It seems lately the new trend in dress shirts is "slim fit," and I had recently bought a shirt off the shelf at mens wearhouse where everything was slim fit. I didn't try it on in the store but the sales guy said that slim just meant it wouldn't be baggy. I figured someone making a shirt with an 18" neck would know that the wearer isn't "slim" but sure enough, when I finally put it on I could barely button it up.  In a pinch I stopped at old navy just to get something cheap and again, everything was slim fit. WTF.   So I ended up and DXL -- didn't buy a shirt but did get a jacket.

I liked the store but I don't have a ton of fashion sense and everything seem'd kinda flashy. A lot of the suits seemed more like something a 350 linebacker would wear on Sunday to his Pentecostal church (like bright purple, or yellow, or bold pinstripes.)

Got this at Filson.

In black.  It is my favorite single piece of clothing.  Best to wear it with other clothing tho.

I would like a similar vest and had from alpaca.

Winter time it's a black hoodie, summer time it's a plain black t-shirt or black polo (a few with my employer's logo).

But I did just have to go shopping for some clothes for a wedding and I grabbed a couple casual dress shirts and vests that I must say looked pretty slick with my jeans so it's possible I'll work those in on occasion.
