Other than when he dropped his stick, how do you know when he messes up? Not that I can't appreciate it without knowing... I just like to know, you know?

its the artist's way :-)

when i'm improvising on the keyboard and i hit a bad note i just convert it to some sort of diminished chord or other such dissident chord that can be resolved to sound like I did it on purpose to create and release tension.  Then i repeat it a few times (with varying dynamics) to make it sound like i did it on purpose.

on a side note, wouldn't it be ironic if this guy was deaf?

Yes, especially for someone like me with no ear (or eye) for art.
