Time for applets to die
« on: July 09, 2008, 04:45:46 PM »
I'm a Java programmer all day long so I appreciate the language and the coding in it, but I hate applets. Not because they're necessarily bad, but I've never really seen a good one. And they crash/hang my browser all the time. I know they were really popular a few years ago but I really don't see the need for them anymore. Do Flash or AJAX.

I'd like to see flash die also.  IMO ajax and applets are two different beasts.  I think the better thing would be to reconsider whether or not you really need that applet/flash in your page.  99% of the ones I've see are not really needed.

this country is built on the unneccessary tho lol.

And why kill flash? I think it has plenty of valid uses.

I'm not a big fan of Flash for web design but I don't know how you'd do video sites like youtube without it.

So youtube is OK to use flash, but only for the video part.

Facebook uses an applet for image uploading. It's way better than selecting file paths individually for a form and it seems more appropriate than flash.
