Wordpress plugins
« on: December 23, 2010, 12:25:13 AM »
Without going deep into explanations, I need opinions on the following for my wordpress needs (as plugins/widgets)

  • Customizable archives (most importantly, based on a specific tag)
  • An events calendar (both as a list and as a calendar)
  • Ability to show PDF archives (or some other sort of document management)
  • Photo gallery

Mostly, I'd just like to know if any of you have used anything particular that you would recommend.  We already have a couple of these in place like an events calendar, but since we're changing a bunch of things, I figure why not look for anything else that works...

Events calendar = embedded Google calendar.  You won't find a better plugin.  It can do lists too.

I haven't done the others in WP.  I don't do blogs so I'm shit on the archives.  If you want to dump WP altogether, I have suggestions for a Joomla gallery.

None of the team wants to go through the effort of going to Joomla.  We're pretty comfortable with WP, and I think going to another CMS would just confuse the user even more than he is now.

Right now, we're using WP Events Calendar for events.  Possibly because it gives you the option to create a post automatically when you add the event.  I'll keep it in mind, but the Google calendar has a tendency to not actually stay updated in general.

I've used WP Events Calendar.  It's alright, but highly limited IMO.

So far we've gone with these:

List category posts (for the archive by tag)
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/list-category-posts/

WP-DownloadManager (for document management)
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-downloadmanager/

The problem with the photo gallery is that I'm not sure yet if we want to keep a self-hosted archive or just to draw specific photos out of flickr.  That and there are just so many different solutions.

We will probably stick with WP Events Calendar.  How would you say it's limited?

The last time I looked, you couldn't do even registration... which may not be important to you.
