Mice: Solid state scroll pads
« on: April 25, 2005, 10:54:31 AM »
hey, anyone ever used a scroll pad? Its kind of like a scroll wheel but its solid state and just detects your finger sliding up and down (or right to left). Looks pretty cool, this is a laptop mouse btw.

The website says$70 USD, but it's $60 CDN at future shop.

aside: Im addicted to technology toys... must.. stop .... buying.. .stuff.

Looks interesting enough, but doesn't seem like it'd be quite as practical as a wheel.

my laptop has something like that on its trackpad... the side of it can be used as a scrolling wheel if configured correctly. i use it sometimes... it's less sensitive than a wheel so it's useful for scrolling though a ton of something

ygf: yeah, ive seen those scroll-able touch pad sides. My laptop is a little to old to have that feature though. The nice thing about this mouse is that if you slide your finger to the end and hold it there it will  continue to scroll untill you release your finger.

I think i might pick this mouse up and see how it plays with linux. I know the left/right scroll wont work (doesnt work in windows without installing the logitech driver either) but i don't care much about that, as long as up/down scroll works.

well, i went by future shop today and the price of the mouse was lowered to $35 CDN, so i bought it. So far i really like it. The "all-terrain" thing is actaully really great. The mouse works anywhere, on my knee, on the couch, the pillow... The scroll thing is cool. Its nice to be able to touch the top or bottom of the scroll pad and just continuously scroll. Dragging your finger on it works well too, and all in linux!

my only complaint is that there is no middle click (which is "paste" in many linux window managers). By coincidence, dragging my finger to the left has the same op code as paste! heh, so that worked out well. I can also click both buttons at the same time to emulate middle click.

overall, i really like this mouse. Its small enough to make a good laptop mouse, the solid state scrolling is neat, its wireless, and it works in linux :)

aside: one oddity of the mouse is that the scrolling makes the same "click" noise as a scroll wheel.. weird.
