War & Peace
« on: January 13, 2009, 11:47:10 PM »
Well I didn't make any official resolutions this year, basically because I map out plan of things I want to do each month, but this one's been on the list for a while: read War & Peace, cover to cover, all 1,400 pages.

I had an old Constance Garnett translation, but it's a cheap copy and the binding is very bad and I worried it wouldn't last the journey.  So I bought a new copy, a Penguin "Red Version" (basically the book without any of their typically long and dry introductory notes) with a new translation by Anthony Briggs.

I've quickly scanned both texts, the language is almost par for par, Briggs' being slightly more coarse.

I'm going back to uni in about a month and a half so I think that's a fair enough and reasonable time-frame to get through it.  I hope.

I'm thinking I should maybe blog my readings, if I do I'll post the link here.

nice. One of the best history books I've ever read. It took me about three attempts to do it.

Maybe I'll read it alongside with you...hmmmm

oh, and I also read the Garnett translation....I wonder if Pevear and Volokhonsky tackled this one - their russian-english translations are by far my favorite.

Sadly, not at all.  I haven't really had much spare time at all, I doubt that I'll have a chance to get stuck in.  There's always my next holidays though.
