Pebble
« on: May 07, 2013, 02:38:58 PM »
I was a Pebble backer, partly because I wanted to support a start-up by a Waterloo grad and partly (mostly?) because I just can't resist tech toys, especially when they are affordable-ish. I received it last tuesday and have been playing with it for a week.

For those who don't know what Pebble is, it's basically a digital e-paper watch that connects to your smart phone:

In short, it's a cool, though completely unnecessary toy. It's fun to wear around the CS departement of my school, though I still wear my regular watch when I "go out." The plastic watch face and rubber band just feel a little bit like the calculator watch I wore when I was 10 years old. It displays text messages, emails, and shows calls (also facebook updates if you want). You can cancel calls from the watch as well which is pretty cool since I generally have my phone in my bag. Knowing if a phone alert is worth digging my phone out for is a pretty nice convenience. Also being able to see who's calling when my phone is in a different room at home charging is pretty cool. The other day my phone started ringing while my daughter was sleeping and I was in a different room. I saw the caller (new york area code == spam) and was able to cancel call after a ring or two. You can activate the backlight by flicking your wrist which is handy too.

Overall I'm glad I picked it up, $115 was nothing for something like this. The technology is cool and they've released an SDK I'd love to play with (although apparently you need something called "free time" in order to develop stuff, not sure what that is all about). You can also create your own watch faces. Check out, http://www.mypebblefaces.com/ , a community built site of user contributed watch faces.

Thanks for the review. Sounds like what I would have expected. Can you also control things like the iPod?

You can control music, on Android there is a list of 9 or 10 music apps that it works with (music player, MX, Songza, etc...). Not sure what it supports on iPod but probably the default music player at least.

So, almost 3 years later and I got quite a bit of use out of my pebble. Battery still lasts a week on a single charge.

My wife got me a new pebble for my birthday, a Pebble Time Steel. Much nicer looking, color high resolution e paper display, health tracking, and the battery still lasts a week (with the screen always on!)

Love my pebble :)
