Nothing but the best for this place!

Of course I get vastly superior access at home.

at work:

this brings up a topic I was thinking of post today or soon, we can start a new thread if we need too:

does anyone use DSL by choice instead of cable?  When I move next month I'm thinking of switching to save money.

I don't stream movies and only download a mp3's every once in a while.  ever since the baby and being so busy at work, I really only use my home internet connection for general surfing - email, facebook, esink, news, etc.   The only downside is that I do occasionally do video chat via skype or google (a couple times a month)

I'm wondering if the savings is enough to offset the slower speeds... and will I even notice?

I've thought about downgrading maybe less mbs from cable. Like you (Micah), i don't really download or stream a lot of stuff.....for the most part, but there are times when i need to download stuff for work; for example just last week i downloaded 6  GIGS worth of oracle software to try things out.. so i don't, know it's a tough choice.

EDIT:
@Perspective do you guys really need that much speed at work? (am sure it's nice though, just curious)

It's a university (also, a university known for Computer Science), so ridiculously fast internet is somehow justifiable.

the faster the better. I was just curious if you guys had some huge processing experiment or some stuff where you needed all that.
Cool though.

We use DSL, the slowest available I think. I'll do the speedtest when I get home.

We're probably going to upgrade. The price isn't very different, and we plan on streaming a lot more, and possibly adding vonage or something like that. But as far as regular use the DSL is fine. In fact, we can still stream netflix and enjoy the show. When we watch youtube from our GoogleTV we can see the difference, and downloading or uploading does take a while (e.g. uploading photos to Picasa or sending an email with a big attachment).

Don't do vonage.  Get a MagicJack (IMO).  See my thread in hardware.

Yeah... that's what I meant, I couldn't remember the name. We'll probably start with no home phone at all, so I'll look into it later.

At work we seem to be having some network troubles:

Can he stream a Netflix movie to his TV while his wife uploads photos from her iPhone to Facebook and his kids video chat with grandma in Poland on Skype? That's the question.

Oh... and I hope the answer is yes... since after installing the router and trying again my download speed went down to 8Mbps from 20. Actually I really just hope that's not permanent. :(

One thing I'm LOVING about the new box is Win7s previewer in the taskbar.  Seriously, I love that dang thing.  Got a bunch of the same program open?  The previewer makes it easy to find the right one.  It even updates in (mostly) real time.  I can have 6 game clients open and see enough detail to pick out the one that needs attention.

Electric company?  Internet over power lines?  Obes used to tell me tall tales about that coming to my area.
Title: Re: What's your speed?
Post by: Steve on June 07, 2011, 08:48:43 AM
To my understanding, it's offered by the electric company (along with TV & phone service) but they spent a few months prior running fiber optic lines all over the place.

A pretty sweet deal though, you get 10MB high speed, unlimited phone calls, and 500 channels including HD for $75/mo

Interesting.  I know they talked about doing it where my parents/Knuck used to live but then it never happened.

That's a really good price for that stuff.
Title: Re: What's your speed?
Post by: Steve on June 07, 2011, 10:28:24 AM
Especially when you compare it to dish where they charge you $100 for the internet alone. If all you want is internet the electric company will give you that same 10mb connection for $30 a month.

Now I would suspect that eventually they will be more like comcast prices. This is a new thing and imo they are trying to quickly steal away all the sat customers with faster internet and insane pricing. Brilliant, really.

just gonna bump this 9-year old thread.  Curious what everyone's got now that we live in the future.
I'm still around 20Mbps at home with my cheap-ass plan.
At my girlfriends house, I've always got around 35Mbps when it works.  The wifi router hardware is old and sucks and often cuts out, it need to be rebooted nearly every day.  Last night I had her call comcast and they're sending her a new router.  Meanwhile, while she was on the phone with them, i plugged my laptop directly into her modem and HOLY SHIT

Post by: Perspective on June 04, 2020, 12:03:48 PM
Woah, weird that I was just running speed tests before coming here.

I'm getting around 250 down and 10 up. I pay for 1Gb down and I think 30 up (well, I pay about 30% of the list price because I keep trying to cancel my service every time my current promotion ends.)

I'm using the built-in wireless router that's in the modem. I have an external router coming today that I will test out. We have a lot of devices (including 3 nest cams streaming HD) so I hope a router with more antennae's will actually help... we'll see.

I actually don't have any problems with our connection, but my wife says her streaming platform (some special tele-health thing) has quality issues and it's only her that seems to have the problem. Other people on her calls say the quality is fine.
Title: Re: What's your speed?
Post by: micah on June 04, 2020, 12:34:48 PM
I wouldn't be surprised if here tele-health app goes through a centralized server, if not VPN, then just https but either way, especially with such heavy traffic nowadays, that's probably the bottleneck
Title: Re: What's your speed?
Post by: ober on June 04, 2020, 01:15:22 PM
@perspective - that sounds like maybe you're using an older modem that doesn't support the higher speeds.... or your router can't handle the throughput.  I moved to a Docsis 3.1 modem a few months ago and got an Orbi mesh network and now my kids in the basement that are wired into the satellite get pretty much the same speeds as me being wired directly into the router.

generally, my "slow" 25Mbs down doesn't bother me...but what absolutely SUCKS is only have 1 to < 2 upload speed. uploading large files for work or trying to video conference while my kids game..its really rough.   Now that my house is clean enough to let an installation person come, I'm planning to switch to something like what (most of) you all have... at least 100/5 if not 200/5+.  Just waiting to make sure my ex moves out and know that I'm definitely staying in this house for another year.

Yeah, the modem is fairly new and it's the only Gigabit modem my ISP has. But I'm pretty sure the built-in router is garbage, especially with many connected devices. I'll see how things change once I find some time to set up my new router.

So I've been losing my mind because the Reddit app has been loading images and video slowly... but as soon as I switch off wifi it's fast.  That's the only app that has issues and I just read all over the net that the reddit app has had issues with this over the years.

I got about 75-80 down and ~5.5 up when I tested yesterday and again today from my windows laptop.

I'm paying for "Download as fast as 175 Mbps".

so I upgraded.  Still not great like you guys all have, but to keep the same provider and also not have to have a new coax run to my basement (which is still a mess) - the best I could get in my area is 70Mbps downand 3 up.  The guys had to still do a bunch of work (like climb a telephone line and everything) but he only had to spend a couple minutes in my messy trash-hole bedroom to plug in the new hardware.

Anyway, wired in to the router I was getting 79 down!! and 7.5 up!!!!!  he said they push more bandwidth then you payfor because, the further you are from the hub the less you get and i'm close enough where I benefit from that.  So that's way more than 3X what I had before.

Wifi I got similar speeds on my phone but my work laptop is pulling down between 60-65 from a couple rooms away.  Again, still 3 times better than what i had.

I know 60-75 isn't like "great" but coming from 18max with a shitty router this feels like christmas.
Title: Re: What's your speed?
Post by: Perspective on June 09, 2020, 11:34:01 AM
Honestly, when I got my 1Gbps internet it was because I was trying to cancel with the big provider to sign up for 75Mbps service with a cheaper reseller. I'm pretty sure it would be enough for most usage. I only stayed because I got the 1 Gbps for half of what the 75Mbps would have cost.

I know 60-75 isn't like "great"

Edit: Got confused.. forgot that's what I'm getting at my house. Currently staying with in-laws and despite them having lots of devices and high-tech stuff they only get about 35-40 Mbps.
