Does being the last team listed in pool four mean we are the lowest rated team in the field?  If not, what do the different pools mean?

The listings per pool are just alphabetical.  Being in pool 4 implies (I believe) that we're among the weakest teams, though.

Thats what I thought until I noticed the pools were alphabetized rather poorly.  But then again, it might have been alphabetized in another language than translated over.

Granted I haven't been following soccer much since the last World Cup but I really thought the US was better than that.

The alphabetical thing was just me assuming after glancing at it.  If the US is really ranked last out of all the teams, that's pretty damn poor.

We aren't an elite team in the world yet, but we're certainly getting better and are better than many of the other teams that qualified.  Hell, we were the first team in our group to qualify for the WC, ahead of Mexico, T&T, and Costa Rica.

Ok, I read an article on this, those pools that you show were set up so that no group can have more than one team from a continent except for Europe.  Only pool one means anything, those are the #1 seeds for each of the groups.  Apparently the US just barely missed out on getting a number 1 seed finishing at 9th based on their ratings.

There is a controversy though since everyone knows that both the US and the Netherlands are better than Spain and Mexico who both got top seeds.  Also, they were aloud to pick the top seeds BEFORE they had to announce what formula they were using so a lot of people think they chose whoever they wanted and then afterwards created a formula that justified their decision.

Australia should go okay then if the pools don't change.

The last time I checked the USA was just behind Mexico (6th and 5th, respectively if I recall correctly). The US 'should' have actually leapfrogged Mexico in the FIFA rankings because of that last world cup qualification win against Mexico.

It's probably as PJ as described - there's some rotten politics involved.

Best just to ignore it, hope you don't get drawn in Brazil's group and prove your ability on the field of play.

Although, to be honest, I don't think the USA has the strength and versatility to win. But then I did say Mexico would beat the USA, so....

Oh, and congratulations on Australia's qualification, Stealthy.

Oh, I'm not crazy enough to think we can win, either.  Frankly, it'd shock me to see anyone but Brazil win again, but that's just me.  I'd just like to see us get out of the group stage.  More than anything, I'd like to see us put together some sort of a run that generates more interest in the sport here, but I know that's a pretty foolish thing to ask for.

Since two teams make it from each group we should have a good chance to at least make the playoff round.  Only thing to worry about is if we get a crappy draw and get stuck with the Netherlands and a pretty good #1 seed.

>>a run that generates more interest in the sport here<<

That would be good. :)

Spain and England are two teams that have the players but don't seem to be able to translate that into consistently good results.

But England can't win it, though - 40 years since they won it before, in Germany - life would be unbearable here for the next 100 years or so.

I'd like to see Sweden do well. :)

England can't win.  I'm sick of hearing about Beckham over here as it is, and if they somehow win, it'll be nothing but him.  Even if he's mistaken for a woman and kidnapped by the Iranian team, as far as America is concerned, soccer will just be David Beckham.
