Data Backups
« on: November 27, 2005, 01:39:21 PM »
I'm not the best with doing backups, I try hard not to store much on my PCs that I couldn't recreate or have stored somewhere. I backup maybe every few months but it's mostly a complete backup to DVDs just to have the files. I've been thinking though do you guys encrypt your backups? What sort of backup routines do you use for your home systems? I was watching a TV show where they have a thief rob your house and then do a security upgrade (good show) and once the thief even took the backups. I thought it might be good to start looking into encrypting my backups from now on just in case.

I don't bother encrypting any of my backups.  Seems like a waste of time to me.

I must make a backup of my system soon, there's so much data on it it'd be a pain to loose. I almost screamed a couple nights ago because I deleted my Fedora 4 partitions and GRUB went with it, so I ran fixmbr from the XP boot disc, but for some reason because I have 2 NTFS partitions it labelled my system drive D instead of C, and I couldn't boot into XP. I ended up reinstalling Fedora. Lucky escape, with my l337 knowledge of bootloaders :)

The data I've got isn't really valuable enough to encrypt, it's all stuff I can get back, and I've got my dogs to protect us from theifs.

I often backed up my school work after each semester was over, and backed up whenever I format, although its probably been a year since my last backup.  If my system did crash, there is some stuff that I probably wouldnt want to lose, so I should look into backing it up shortly.

I have never thought about encryption,  if they want my backups, they can take them :|

I use Retrospeck with my 160 gig WD external HD.  It does a complete backup of all document files, pics, and mp3s automatically twice a week (overwriting itself).  And I do a complete backup once a month or so.

I also just got Nero 7 Ultra (for $20 from Best Buy's Black Friday sale :D).  I haven't tried it yet, but it's supposed to have pretty good backup software.

I keep forgetting Nero can do backups.
I've made a date with it, this Saturday, noon.

Since it's gone there...

You aren't installing new hardware too?

I usually use ghost to clone the drives... I should probably back up soon too... my system uptime was something like 103 days before I compiled and (tried to) boot into it the other night.

I'm thinking of switching to images on DVD's though.  having to buy two of each drive gets expensive fast :p
