New camera and stuff
« on: May 31, 2010, 09:39:28 PM »
well in the couple of months I've been away I decided the time had come to get back into my photography (not got much time though as I'm doing three OU degree courses this year) - so after figuring out that my lenses were carp. I bought the following (kept my macro lens as that is a goodie):
Sigma 10-20mm f4.5-5.6
Nikon 80-200 f2.8
Tamron 28-75 f2.8 (would have liked the nikon version but its about 1,000 gbp)

So all my filter sizes had now changed so went into the local camera shop to buy a 77mm circ polariser filter and umm came out of the shop with a new camera (wasnt until I got home that I remembered about the filter). I hadnt changed my camera in about 9 years (it must have about 100k shutter actuations) and this just called out to me - so now I have a Nikon D300s and loving every minute of it. Am off to a big cat breeding place in July - they do special photographer days where they open up for about a group of 10 photographers and you get pretty close to the cats - really looking forward to it.

Am getting overly excited about photographs again :-)

Hey Bassy! Good to see you around again.

Nice camera - this place needs more Nikon owners ;)

IIRC you have a tamron SP90. I had a stroke of luck and picked one of those up (the old manual focus jobby) at our local antique centre (they sell all sorts of stuff) for £12! It's mint, but it has a Canon adaptor, so I need to get a Nikon adaptor for it.

Wow - just read a story the other day about what a great camera the D300 is but that they are impossible to get - they just aren't producing enough of them....nice!
govtcheez03:  i kind of look for it - i seek out stupidity and annoy it until it either gets better, gets banned, or goes away on its own

nice! I need to get a wide angle lens :(
Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Hey Rob thanks
I have 4 nikons now so we can overthrow those dreadful canon users :-)
The tamron 90mm sp is a cracking lens especially for the price - can double as a decent portrait lens too

nice! I need to get a wide angle lens :(
The sigma one i got is really good especially for the price (the nikon equivalent was well over a grand) and strangely it is sharper than the fixed f4 version (think its f4), thinkk there is a really good tokina in that range too

its a cracking piece of kit - been really chuffed with the results I am getting from it - the dynamic range is so much wider than my old D100 and higher ISOs are much less noisy, its fast focussing - ahh if I could marry it I would. Yep we are having real problems in the UK getting nikon stock at the moment - the icelandic volcano didnt help and so deliveries are now way behind.

So...

Sorry to bump an elderly thread, but I want to change my D60 to something a bit better (better AF mainly - the D60 only has 3 AF points).

Considering a D90, a D200 or a D300, all 2nd user. The D300 seems to go for a bit more than I want to pay, but I'm hoping Bassy will convince me :p :D.

So, whaddya reckon Bassy?

(Sorry Canonites, gotta be a Nikon - too many Nikon fit lenses)

The D300 is lovely - found the handling much better than the D90 - and its 51 AF points is great for wildlife and sports stuff (though still getting used to the 51 3D points) - its really good with higher ISO too. I have been matching some photos taken with iso 1600 against my d100 and the noise difference is really noticeable - in that my d300 has lots less.

its a great piece of kit - but then its a semi pro camera body whereas the D60-D90 are hobbyist bodies, so its build is a lot bettr.

So. I bought a used D200 in the end. Couldn't justify a D300. Just trying to get used to it now.

Oh, just the same old same old. 18-55 VR, Siggy 70-300 and my fave Tamron SP90.

Looking to buy some more primes when I can.

been extremely busy ethic - had no real free time for about a 18 months or so now - this week is the first weeks holiday that i have taken in almost two years... been in a heavy contract, finishing my OU maths degree and trying to set up my photo business too... am pretty knackered and havent even really been responding to much on facebook either. Most weekends were spent working too.
