Spyware Removal
« on: April 26, 2006, 09:33:56 PM »
Wasnt sure where to post this, so I guess this is the best spot.

My brother recently got a new computer, and has spyware on it already!!!  A popup was coming up telling him about a trojan and saying to go to a website to d/l a removal tool.

I ran adaware and spybot and removed whatever I could, and it removed that issue.  I also ran a virus scan, and there are no viruses.  Also removed all temp files from IE.

The IE homepage however still goes to safetydefender.com.

I did a search and saw on a forum that I should boot into SafeMode run hijack this, and delete particular files, however it doesnt boot into safemode.  When I select the mode and boot into it I get all these printouts saying

fdisk(0)mulit(1)\dir\dir\dir

something like that, and on the entire page, I have no idea what it is...

I ran hijack this and it came up with the log below, and I didnt see anything I could remove.  I also attached a screenshot of the site it goes it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check to see if the boot.ini is valid? That looks like something out of that file, but I'm not sure exactly how to configure it properly.

Sounds like a tough one.  Since the system is fairly new, is there a problem with just formatting and reinstalling?

Once a computer HAS spyware, it will always be compromised (assuming its windows). You can have a bunch of preventitive software, but once you get something like what you have now, the computer needs to be formatted.

I'll just say it because I know it's coming:

Linux.

Ok, seriously, I've never had such a big problem with spyware. I've got "Trend Micro" antivirus and I only occasionally run programs like Ad-Aware or Spybot. But tell your brother not to click on popups.
