Where do you go for components?
« on: September 01, 2010, 02:17:11 PM »
Looking to get a new box.  I think for this one I'm gonna go back and look at parting it out.  Need recommendations of places to find the components.

www.newegg.com

Tried Tiger Direct a few times and was disappointed.  I've also used www.buy.com a few times.

New Egg and Amazon.  Usually comes down to shipping.  My last PC was almost all amazon.

I would recommend something like...

- Intel Core i5-750 Quad Core or an AMD Phenon II x6.  $200 or slightly less

- Nvidia 460 series video solution ($200 to 230) Nothing wrong with AMD/ATI here you just get more bang for the $ with Nvidia at this point in time.

- 1TB HDD, 32M cache, 7200 RPM ($70)

- Asus or Gigabyte mobo (not that there aren't other great companies) ($150 to 230)

- 4GB of DDR3 ($70 and up)

- Some sort of DVD burner ($15 to 25)

 - Case with at least (did I say at least?) three 120mm fans installed in it ($70 and up)

I find that Coolermaster, NZXT, and Antec are the best overall case manufacturers for the money.

Almost exclusively newegg.com but sometimes I'll pick it up at the local MicroCenter if the prices are the same and I want it sooner.  (and CPUs are often much cheaper there for in-store purchase)

Be careful about the cpu/mb combo you get if you're looking for onboard video (you're probably not), I made that mistake when building our dev "server" here at work when I went with the i7 and found out it doesn't support integrated video and the board needed an i5 to use it.

I just built a new PC almost entirely off of newegg. Would have been entirely, but somehow I forgot to order ram so I ended up getting RAM from tigerdirect.
