Title: Who wired their house for ethernet?
Post by: hans on January 18, 2021, 10:43:44 AM
What cable did you choose? I know I need plenum, but it seems like cat6 is the common version vs cat6e or 'a'.

I tried using a powerline setup but the speeds were not impressive in my house (probably the meh wiring). So I'm going to stop being lazy and run cables to each room.

We have regular cat6 plenum. Nothing we have can really take advantage of anything else. Even cat6 is technically overkill but figure we'd be "future-proof."

Why not just get a mesh router?  My kids get almost the same speeds as me being hardwired 2 floors down (they are hardwired into the satellite).  Running cables is just a pain in the ass.

I have the Google Nest one but I'm not getting fast enough speeds now that I have gig fiber. Could be the Google one is just not impressive. I also don't have the ethernet backhaul.

My internet is only 200Mbps (advertised) and I have an Orbi which does have the triband backhaul channel (wireless).  Works great for us.  The kids (again, 2 floors down), get 200+ Mbps down.
