Gaming PC
« on: December 15, 2013, 01:25:51 PM »
Long story short:

My son wants a PC to play games on, having grown bored of XBOX etc. I have no idea on current specs, so I'm looking for some advice on what processor, GPU etc you would recommend. He doesn't have vast amounts to spend, so I would appreciate some budget options, especially ones we could easily upgrade later.

Ta,

Rob.

You will also need an optical drive (borrow one of you can), and OS.

The keyboard, mouse, and monitor are personal decisions.

Overall advice.
Power supply should be single rail, stay away from AMD CPUs and GPUs for gaming, spend as much of your $$ as you can on the video card, keep it clean inside.  This case lends itself to easy filtering.  Let me know if you want to know how.

Yell if you want me to elaborate or elucidate.

That's a pretty decent rig on the cheap.  Also figure on $100 or more for Windows 8 (yes, I said it, W8).  Costs the same as W7 and you might as well jump into the future.  I prefer it over 7 now.

Yea - forget windows.  If he just wants it for gaming (depending on what games he wants to play), give it a couple weeks and see if SteamOS is what it looks like it's gonna be and do that :-).   Maybe partition off the HD from the start to allow for a SteamOS partition, a data partition, and an empty one so you can add windows later if you want.

Windows is the way to go ATM.  8 preferably.  7 if you have it laying around for free.  (x64 - both)

Steam OS is not ready for prime time gaming.

PC gaming is a ton cheaper than console gaming.

Watch for sales on Amazon, Steam, Good Old Games, Green Man Gaming, and GameFly.  You can often get very nice titles and or classic sets for $2.50 to $10.  A bit of patience is all it takes.

Also tons of great free to play games these days.  Many of which are as good or nearly as full AAA pay games.  TF2, Planetside 2, Rift, , Path of Exile, League of Legends, Everquest Next, DOTA 2, Warframe, Star Wars The Old Republic, and hundreds of others.  Just get the Steam client and look under free to play.

Gotta be windows guys, but appreciate the input. He wants to do some graphic design on it too.

Knuck, the mobo you suggested, is that a particularly good one, or is something of a similar spec as good. I'm buying from the UK, probably from somewhere like this...

Some of these looked interesting

I know you're going for cheap, but I personally would push for the i5 processor.

I agree with Obes on the i5, but budget was a priority.  If he is doing graphics work then the quad cores will come in really handy.

The mobo, PS, and CPU you linked are fine.

I would avoid the PNY brand.  The other brands should be fine.

Or you might consider a 660.

Windows it is then!  I do think it's premature to just say Windows out of hand though knuck - we don't know enough about the 2 day old steamOS yet...will be interesting to see - valve isn't known for shipping half done shit....

Well to be fair SteamOS is still a beta product.  But yeah, for a gaming only rig I would look at it.  For gaming+ then no.

Er...yes they are.  They are beta kings juuust like Google.

It is not a gaming OS, it is more of a HTPC setup at this point that can mostly play only Valve games.  Not Steam.  Valve.  Trust me for gaming the only OS in town is Windows.  For now.

mostly play only Valve games.  Not Steam.  Valve.
That doesn't appear to be true.  It'll play steam games as long as there is a linux port of that game.
