So I got my girlfriend the Touch Nook and I have an iPad and was starting to look for some books to get. Lately though as I've been shopping, the books I though were $10-$15 are now in the $30 neighborhood and typically only a couple dollars cheaper than their physical counterparts. When did this happen? And what's the point of buying the digital book for the same price I can get the physical one (beyond storage space)?
Where's the deal these were supposed to be?

Good lord, $30? I've never spent more than $15 on an ebook and that was the day it came out. I'd never pay that for an ebook.

Are you sure you were looking at the Nook versions? I'm looking at the BN top 100 books right now and the most expensive one I see is the aforementioned $15 book that came out 2 weeks ago. Most of them are $10 or $13 or less

I thought B&N was going belly up...? :(

Yeah, Borders is closing all their stores. I was at my local one this weekend and picked up a few books on sale. It was a madhouse.

orly? when did that change? A few months ago they are closing 30%, now its all of them? too bad...I always liked borders more than B&N

They came out last week and announced it. Books A Million is buying some of them I think, but the others will be closed
Another MI company down the drain

Yeah. Boo on that. Used to love visiting the store on 28th in GR. For years they were very forward thinking.
-
Eh, I'd take a B&N over borders any day.
-
As things stand Amazon blows them all away IMO.

Are you sure? B&N offers a $25/year membership that gives you free shipping on everything plus you get tons of coupons constantly for 20% off or more. We've been getting popular books for $5-9 or less, several in hard cover. It also gives you discounts to the Starbucks inside them (at least our local one has one).

But do they work with Kindle?
-
I don't have an eReader so I have no idea. I was only referring to physical books.
-
Never buy physical books anymore. Kindle app for me.

Some books are better as hardcopy - instruction books, cookbooks, etc. Most others I'll just buy ebooks, although there is something nice about a new, real book.

Some books yes. And that nice new real book feel goes out the window when I'm done reading it and go "fuck! Where do I put this" and then repeat that for the next 3-4 moves

I will (hopefully) take the plunge into ereading in about half a year. Kindle is on my christmas wish list :D

Now that you're rich you can buy yourself a Kindle!
-
Hahhaha. I'm a looooooooooong way from rich.
And the kindle will be a gift from my wife
-
Buy a kindle for now to use until Xmas and then she gives you a new one and you give her the old one. Everyone wins!
