That's what I thought too, but it was just as bad when my wife was taking the pics.
However, I did find out that there was a firmware upgrade for the camera, so I did that and played around with some settings. I think for the most part, the flash wasn't kicking on strong enough and it was compensating for the bad light in the rooms we were shooting in. I took a few pics with some settings changed and they look a lot better. I have yet to take any pics outside, but I'm sure they'll come out good.
