512 MB or 768 MB RAM???
« on: July 30, 2005, 01:17:22 PM »
Hi guys. I have one dilema. I had 256 MB SDRAM, and recently bought one module of 512MB. I just put it in free slot. Everything works OK but some people I know suggest that is not wise because memory should be power of 2 (32, 64, 128, 256, 512,...). They claim computer with 768 MB RAM will work slower than with 512 MB because system overhead needed to calculate memory addresses, and that overhead is there because amount of memory is not power of number 2.
Can you give me some advice?

I have following configuration:
Motherboard: Asus as7-vm
CPU AMD Duron 750 MHz
RAM 768 (256+512)
VGA integrated (32 MB)

Thanks for help

i've never heard of that myself. i can't speak for the hardware level but at the assembly language level address calculations are done the same regardless of how much memory actually exists.

Thats bogus. It is possible for your box to run slower in that state if your 256 stick clocks lower than your 512 (then they will both operate at the lower speed) but other than that it shouldnt make a difference.

Echo the others.  What others have told you is not true.  Make sure you find out the CAS latency on both and put the faster one (lower number) in slot 1.

Thanks Ober, I didn't know that slots are not equal. I'll make sure to do what you've  suggested.

It's not that the slots are not equal... it's just that the first one sets the speed that they all run at.
