Tablet discussion
« on: November 17, 2011, 11:35:57 AM »
Anyone have one of these yet? I'm pondering getting on for my mom for xmas. Her old dell laptop has seen better days and since she mostly checks email and shops on ebay I think it's plenty. The fact that it's small is probably OK as she's just going to use it in bed and on the couch most likely, although she might end up carrying it around with her. Printing might be an issue but I don't think she does much of that.

I'm just curious any real reviews.

I'd probably consider a Kindle over a Nook, personally.  We are referring to the B&N Nook, right?

The new Nook Tablet. The Amazon Fire competitor (mini iPads).

I would suggest a low end tablet (like an HP) or a mid grade like the Samsung Galaxy before i suggest the kindle or nook.

Specs-wise, the Nook Tablet looks like it's better than the Fire in almost every way, and for only $50 more.  I'd definitely be getting it except that I'm already a Kindle owner and there's no Kindle app available in the Android Appstore on the Nook Tablets.

Hardware wise yes, but isn't the Amazon ecosystem a hefty step up from that provided by B&N?

I don't know what that means, but this makes it sound like the answer is likely no

Those 12 are a big deal. Especially the buttons, market, and storage

The storage doesn't bother me, but the lack of buttons definitely does.  I read another review that says the interface is great though.

The volume buttons may be the biggest oversight of all

The Amazon media selection always seemed pretty impressive to me, plus they sell damned near anything else you can imagine.  They are pretty obviously attempting to create their own Apple style ecosystem (my conjecture).

B&N have a great book selection but are they really ready to take on and beat Amazon in the other markets?

I don't really have a side here.  I only noticed because I had a gift card to B&N a couple years back and ended up trading it in for an Amazon one of equal value.

BTW I dislike the lack of physical buttons.  However I would bet it will become the norm soon enough.

I very strongly doubt this. Touch will never quite be fast enough for the panicked person who is in a rush to kill volume. Physical buttons require no thought, speed, processing, or anything else. Touch is absolutely the future, but our volume and power buttons are, too.

Edit: Just think of the poor guy in the living room at thanksgiving who's porn starts blaring.

Why would you be watching porn in the living room on thanksgiving?

I wouldn't. I never said me, I was just trying to convey an embarrassing situation relative to sound.

Choose a scenario where the person isn't being a dumbass and deserving of the embarrassment they received.
