What do you wear to work?
« on: May 23, 2018, 02:06:31 AM »
I've work in a wide array of office settings.  They've all been "business casual" but that definition varies greatly.  A the big downtown insurance brokerage place it meant minimum khakis and a tie, but slacks and a jacket were common.  At the non-profit it meant khakis and a polo or button down shirt.  8 years in marketing and its a world of jeans and hoodies - depending on the person, those might be $20 old navy jeans or $150 designer jeans paired with Neiman Marcus blazer.  Sort of anything goes.

I just interviewed at another agency - played it smart for the interviews and, for the second round at least, wore a sports coat of slacks with some sharp sneakers.

For the last few years I've mostly worn jeans and a cheap polo, button down or hoodie... kinda whatever I felt like.  If I get a new gig, I might want to start fresh with my "look."  I'm 39 and can re-invent myself if I want.  Just not sure how I want to do that.

So what do you wear to work?

No such thing as sharp sneakers FYI.

I usually wear jeans and a button up, but could wear shorts and a tee if I wished.

usually jeans and a polo, but I could come to work in a house coat and slippers if I wanted.

If you're over 50.

I'm not much help here Micah. Since I work from home I wear athletic shorts and a t-shirt (my pajamas) and sometimes a robe that looks like a smoking jacket. When I worked in an office it was the same thing I wore when not at work- usually jeans and t-shirt, polo, or sweatshirt.

Jeans and a t shirt, or maybe casual button down. No one really cares at my work, except managers usually wear slightly nicer clothes

Mostly jeans and a button up or polo.  I'll wear khakis on occasion with a shirt and goggles.

80% of the time I'm in some nice jeans, a button up, and a sport coat. When I'm meeting with big clients I wear creased slacks.

I feel really good in sport coats and spend a good amount of money so they fit just right. A little bit of tailoring makes a word of difference from off the shelf jackets.
Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

I like the idea of the sports jacket, I kinda think I could pull it off.  Just need to figure out what looks good. In the past I've tried a navy blue jacket over khakis and I looked like I was on my way to the yacht club.  I think I need to try patterns or heavier (non-suit-like) materials.  Whenever I google current fashion trends I end up on GQ or some other site showing people who look ridiculous wearing $400 coats.

on the plus side, I can wear a 52-regular off the rack without tailoring.

Generally I'm jeans and a button up collared shirt.  I transitioned from t-shirts a few years ago and quite like it.

With this 90 degree whether I'm tempted to pull out the slacks instead of the jeans...
