"Thank you for understanding" she said, as she gently kissed my cheek. More like a mother than a lover.

Problem was, I didn't. Not really. The only thing I understood was how much it hurt that she didn't want me.

"It's late" she said. As though this explained everything. Put it all in perspective. Shone a light on it. Wrapped it up. Dotted the t's and crossed the fucking i's. "I'll drive you home".

So we drove with the radio on, sensing the awkwardness of the situation.

Later that night as I shivered under nylon sheets that struggled to keep themselves on the bed, let alone keep out the cold, reality hit like a brick.

I cried. Not the romantic slow-flowing tears that you see on the screen, but big blubbering draw-in-the-breath snot filled sobs. Like a baby.

Where the hell are you when I really need you. Bitch.
