Title: Gonna build a workbench
Post by: hans on January 29, 2016, 02:59:04 PM
So now that I'm getting into the hand tool thing I need to build myself a proper workbench. I've been studying up on youtube and there are so many options but after a bit I kind of like the idea of going simple and doing a nicholson style one. I think I'm going to add a wagon vise on the end though since I think those are pretty cool but otherwise I'm probably just going to use holdfasts and batten.

I found these two pretty useful:

Seems like I should be able to start quite cheaply too with just some stock 2x from the lumber yard. Then I'll probably make a fancier one later at some point.

I need to get a few hand saws now though.

I built two benches so far. One for the house and one in the cabin. The house one was from dimensional labor and it is great. The cabin one was from recycled pallets and it came out awesome too with room for miter saw in the middle. I will be upgrading the top of this bench shortly because rifht now it is made of 1 inch ply wood. I'll post pictures later.

I recommend preparing your bench with bench dogs. Square and round

What's the advantage of the square ones other than that was probably easier to mortise and tenon rather than drill and make dowels back in the day. I was probably just going to do round holes and make some dogs with rectangular tops.

I was planning on getting/making some of these for the dog holes too to use in place of vise/batten sometimes:

That would work too!

I saw one with the round dogs that had brass inserts.  Though I can't seem to google what I saw it really created character.

This is the cabin bench. Same height as the table saw for when I need extra support. Same height as the miter saw also.
