Who will be watching?

Rob, how are you feeling? are you seeing anything live?

I'm going to be watching a lot of the track stuff.  That's what I'm most excited for but I'm sure I'll watch as much of the rest as I can, too.

I'm pissed that I'll be camping during the men's marathon and won't see it.  Hopefully I can catch the women's, though.

Well, even though I'll be watching every second of snowboarding in this year's Olympics, I have to admit it will be somewhat less fun considering it's a foregone conclusion that the U.S. won't win any medals in snowboarding in this year's Olympics.

It's the Summer Olympics.  There are no snowboarding events.

This is the nicest thing I can say.

I didn't know there was more than one Olympics (aside from special) so i just assumed they made the snow like parks do.

To be completely honest I have always found the Olympics to be completely stupid and have no interest at all. Following them is something that I really only do by reading about how events that somewhat interest me have gone. And that has only been since the last Olympics.

Thinking about it the terms Summer and Winter go off in my brain as something I have heard countless times prior to the word Olympics so I don't know how I never put that together.

As for shooting sports I can't wait for Amanda Furrer....so so hawt.

That Greek girl shouldn't have gotten expelled. It wasn't racist

not only is it clearly racist, but it is pointless and just plain mean. That said it should have nothing to do with her career.

No, not seeing any live stuff. Work is a bit intense ATM (pun intended).

What did you guys make of the opening ceremony? Watched pretty much all of it, and thought Danny Boyle did us proud. Brought a lump to even my cynical old throat.

Proud to be British this morning.

I only saw a little bit of it, but I thought the NHS thing was really well done.  When I heard that it would involve Mary Poppins fighting a giant Voldemort my eyes rolled out of my head. When I actually saw it done, though, I was really impressed.

The only other part I saw was the "digital age" and I didn't like that at all.

Also, the American commentators (Brian Williams and Meredith Vieira) were horrible.

I share your sentiment on your last two points.

Overall i was not impressed...the literature bit was my favorite, but the whole thing looked like it was for brits by brits...yet there were a billion people from around the world watching...

Yes!  Liked the opening dance sequence too....the parade is always  meh - DVR was great - allowed us to FF to almost the US before we got to live.  I'll be watching a lot of it this year - gonna be my background noise while I work on a lot of other things :D

Why?  NBC is paying millions to have the rights to broadcast it, and the cable companies are paying NBC for the right to broadcast those channels.....the real money is still in tv....

Phelps just doesn't seem to want it as badly as Lochte. I hope Phelps gets his 3 medals to lead all time...gonna be tough though, coming out of retirement....

How was the archery? Personally i don't get the big deal with archery, these bows we have now a days make it so friggen easy. The first time i picked up a bow was the summer of 2010 and my first shot was just off the bull at 50 yards. Last fall my longest shots in practice were on the bull with groups averaging 4 inches at  200 yards. The world record last I knew is like 300 yards and if I had the space i bet I could at least match it. It's just so damn easy. I dunno maybe I am a natural but I shoot pretty much year round and it's clock work.

Unless it's windy, but even then you can dial in.

I never said aiming vaguely and pushing a button. Im just saying its very easy to do. Now if we are talking speed that is different arrows can be tricky to get loaded quickly.

In September it will be time to go to my moms and get the bow dialed in for deer season. I imagine her back pasture should accomodate 300 yards to i will mark it out with the range finder and put it on youtube. All i want from you afterwards is an apology.

Not really. Different moves have pre-determined point values. Their entire program is worth a fixed number of points if completed. They lose points for mistakes or missed techniques which is a bit subjective, but no more subjective than scoring in a sport like boxing or tae kwon do.

Ok, if you don't have a cable or satellite subscription maybe that's worth it, but if you do, then NBC does just fine. They stream every event, including multiple options for some things (like each apparatus in gymnastics and probably various track and field events simultaneously next week). Also, they use the Olympics announcers, not American ones, so you don't have to worry about annoying homerism if that's not your bag.

In other words, I think that article is wrong is saying NBC isn't providing suitable coverage (unless you don't have a cable or satellite subscription).

yeah yeah nbc needs money blah blah.  I'm spending plenty just to be able to watch then i gotta watch fucking commercials on top of that?

Not really. We (have to) pay an annual license fee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_licensing_in_the_United_Kingdom) that funds the BBC so, not really free. Most of the other FTA channels are paid for by advertising. No adverts on the BEEB.

yeah yeah nbc needs money blah blah.  I'm spending plenty just to be able to watch then i gotta watch fucking commercials on top of that?

about $150 a month for at&t u-verse and $100/yr for strongvpn and i still have to watch commercials.

fuck you nbc and comcast.

But if you were watching on the actual TV would you not have commercials? If I was an advertiser I would want my commercials on all mediums NBC was using to broadcast, especially digital, because you have no way of predicting where the majority will fall. So many people use a laptop and iPad for everything these days that they kind of have to do that.

Anyone see the "highlights" of the women's badminton :disbelief:

Happy side note, Canada gets to compete for a medal since all the good teams got disqualified!

I haven't seen any of it, but I've heard about what happened...just kinda sad...

I'm kinda torn on that.  While the fans don't like it (but honestly, who goes and watches badminton?) trying to get favorable positions even if it means losing isn't uncommon.

Uhh... I watched the NBC primetime feed with my daughters and they showed the fall and basically said that the ending was all but a sure thing after that. What feed were they watching?

Of course, NBC does edit stuff like that to increase drama, so it wouldn't be surprising if they did it for other areas. It's nothing new, that's how their primetime coverage works, especially with such a long tape delay. If you don't like it, watch it live online. This is a pretty tame example.

NBC is sucking it pretty big Charlie, no need to defend them

Seriously. Your devotion to Comcast is pretty ridiculous.

NOT FOR THE OLYMPICS. Do you not understand the
difference here?

Huh? #1, I'm not defending them. I said that what was claimed to have happened didn't happen, at least in my viewing area. I also said that they pull this stuff all the time, it is how they have always done their primetime broadcasts (at least for the last few decades). That's not a defense, that's reinforcing the criticism (but also pointing out that there's no need suddenly be outraged as if something new is happening).

#2, YES FOR THE OLYMPICS. Just the other day I watched swimming online at work, then saw them broadcast the same races during primetime. Live, Michael Phelps was in the first semi-final. In primetime, they switched it so his heat was last and then cut to an interview with him as if he just finished and knew he made the finals, when in fact he had to wait for the second heat to finish before finding out.

This happens all the time and is nothing new. Why is it all of a sudden a big deal, especially for something as small as the alleged gymnastics change. (That's not me defending them, I hate that style of faux drama creation, by the way.)

#3, What does comcast have to do with anything? They have fast internet which I like, they have horrible DVRs which I hate. They own NBC now and NBC is behaving the same way they did when they were owned by GE or whoever it was before.

I think you need to stop reading things into people's posts that aren't there.

Live streaming is a viable alternative in many cases... They don't have to cater to every single person's preferred viewing style.

Of course, I agree with your criticism of their story telling, but Id say it's not so much about deciding the end of the story as it is about generating fake drama rather than setting up the real drama and letting it play out.

The Canada vs. USA women's soccer game (semi-final) was a great game but the refereeing was hard to watch. Canada was leading the entire game (which was a surprise since USA is ranked #1 and Canada is ranked #7) then the ref decided to give the game to the US to force extra time. US had a nice goal in the last 30 seconds of stoppage time at the end of the second extra time period for the win.

The ref called a delay of game penalty against Canada's goalie, but awarded a free kick inside the box instead of a yellow card! A free kick inside the box? Are you kidding me? First of all apparently it's extremely rare to call delay of game penalty at all, second the FIFA rules state that a yellow card should be given. It's a shame a ref would do something so stupid during such an important game. The free kick resulted in incidental contact against the arm of a Canadian player, so the ref gave a penalty kick which tied the game and forced overtime. booooooooooo.

To be fair: Soccer has really shitty refing

Yeah, pretty much every soccer game has some reffing controversy. But it's usually little things like a free kick vs. a dive or which team actually hit a ball out of bounds. This was two bad calls in a row, the first one completely out of the blue, and it directly resulted in a tying goal.
