Printer Install
« on: October 05, 2007, 12:24:25 AM »
I was trying to install a printer for a friend. Its a Samsung CLP-510. I turned on the printer, and connected the USB cables, but Windows doesn't recognize that it is plugged in. When I try to install the drivers, it notifies me that the printer is not connected, or not turned on (which it is).

Any suggestions as to why it wouldnt recognize it? The USB ports function, and I tried two different USB cables.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

Is it turned on?

Is it new? My second thought was cable.....

Try a different computer? I'm thinking either the printer is damaged, or its a USB version compatability issue but it shouldnt be.

USBView is great for checking what USB devices can be seen by your system, and if they have any problems. You can get it here... http://www.ftdichip.com/Resources/Utilities.htm

Printer is turned on, I tried two cables, one from the existing printer (which works).

I will try that utility Rob, and I will try another laptop they have.

Ill keep you updated.

Thanks

I don't know if its the different cable.. but I was able to get the printer installed.

I was able to print a test page from the printer, but wasnt able to print from the computer.  There is an error msg on the lcd display "Yellow Toner Empty". After reading the manual, it appears it has to be replaced in order to print (even black and white). I think I may give samsung a call and try to confirm that.

Anyone ever come across that?

I did a little research, it appears others are having the same problem.  There is a chip on the toner which counts pages.

A little work would be required if I wanted to try and reset the counter. Might be a fun project.. although seems like getting a new printer may be the best option.
