Title: 100 Pushups
Post by: kermi3 on August 17, 2009, 01:14:09 PM
http://hundredpushups.com/challenge.html - gauntlet. Who can do it with me?

I've been rocking the iPhone app for a few months now - seriously doing it for 3 weeks.  It's a great program that slowly increments up the number of pushups you do and regulates your reps.  The goal is to do 100 straight.

I started barely able to do 10 straight, I'm up to 120 pushups over 5 sets and 50 nonstop straight.  Between Saturday and today it bumped me from 100 to 120 - ow.

Anyone want to jump on and do this with me?  It's a great program, jump on either through the website or the app...

that seems reasonable.  I'm game.
Title: Re: 100 Pushups
Post by: charlie on August 17, 2009, 05:55:39 PM
I did my initial test. I got to 6. :(

I've never been strong and I knew I had lost some strength in recent years, but I've always been able to do 10-15 whenever I tried out of the blue. I guess I'm getting old.

I'm also a cheapskate. I don't know if I want to spend $2 on the iPod app. I'll just track it at pushupslogger (as youolej).

I hear ya charlie - my first one was that pitiful too - and I don't like to think of myself as that old...just be honest and keep it up.  Once I sprung for the app for the automatic logging and because I keep it on the front page of my apps to remind me to do it hehe...plus the app does a nice job of managing your reps (counts down how long you wait etc).

I tried to get to 100 pushups awhile back, but with no set routine. I used to be able to do 50-60, but I only got 40 just now.

Cool. I'm game!

I've been trying to build up my core/back/shoulders by doing pullups lately too, so I might die soon.

I actually tested how many pushups I could do after running two miles, and that was 20 so I put 22 down as my initial. I was pretty pooped (still very much so after a run yesterday and walking all day today in 90+ heat), and I don't think a new test today would provide better results anyway.

40's a pretty impressive first number...so's 22 for that matter, at least from where I started...my next one is still only 120, I'm looking forward to that...

Ok, did day 1. Y'all have to keep posting as you do your workouts so we (I) know you're still going and I don't fall off the wagon.

Finished W3D1 also. Final set was 20. I really am not an endurance-y person.

On another note, I was looking at the 200 squats thing and decided to test myself.  I stopped at 75 because I got bored.

I just realized I'm actually a little bit sore today, which isn't typical for me just doing pushups (guess I usually don't do 5 sets)

Hmmm... wow. I tried to do Day 2... Couldn't even do a single one. Muscles felt the same as they did at the end of the last Day 1 set. I guess I'll take another day and try again tomorrow. :|

charlie, what's your hand positioning when you do your pushups?
Title: Re: 100 Pushups
Post by: charlie on August 21, 2009, 04:34:30 PM
Pretty much perpendicular/parallel to the rest of the body parts. Basically like the guys on the http://hundredpushups.com/what.html page.

W4D2 - 140

The last 20 - part of a rep of 36 were very hard.  A slight tickle in my left elbow didn't help....
Title: Re: 100 Pushups

Try putting your hands side by side in the center of your chest for a set.

so do triangle. I'm going to start this today or tomorrow. I fall into column 2 (i can do 8) because of my severe slacking off. I'm proud to say i can do 50 pullups, though, in two sets.

apparently its the same thing, different name. I dont think knuck meant it would be easier, but that it would tone better.

Title: Re: 100 Pushups

It does halp one tone better.  Builds a wider variety of muscle.  And.  It is nice to have a different set now and again.

> It does halp one tone better.

Toning is stupid.  You have muscle and you have fat.  If you increase muscle and lose fat, you look better.  If you lose muscle and increase fat, you look worse.  Tone is a myth.
Title: Re: 100 Pushups
Post by: KnuckleBuckett on August 24, 2009, 11:13:31 AM
Working out throughout a range of motion ie. working your pushups from center of your chest to ribs to wide, creates better range of musculature and thus greater strength in various positions.  No different than moving your grips in and out on the bench press.
Title: Re: 100 Pushups
Post by: Govtcheez on August 24, 2009, 12:46:43 PM
You're right, but that builds muscle.  Calling something "tone" is stupid.

I'm going on three weeks with this cold I have. Thought I had shaken it last saturday and then it came back worse then ever. Don't know about you but every joint I have hurts, my heads ready to explode, sunlight is painful and I'm congested with a sore throat and chest.

If I take any more medication I'm gonna be a coma patient.

Headache and sinus pain is all I've got. It's annoying but a tylenol cold twice a day is good enough.

And I even remembered to do my workout today. :woot:

Probably swine flu. And medication only makes colds/flu last longer

I refuse to seek any medical attention unless i have bone shooting through the skin, and thats under protest. What is a doctor going to do? Yep your sick! Take tylenol, get plenty of rest and drink lots of water. That'll be 400.00 please!

I mostly agree with that sentiment.

A couple years ago my wife got a migraine while at work.  She'd never had one before and was a little freaked out by the fact that it hurt so bad and made her nauseous.  Her boss told her to go to the Emergency Room (and actually drove her there) -- an hour later, while she was still waiting in the ER for some one to see her, I showed up. I said, "this is ridiculous, why are we in the ER for a headache?"  So I called her Primary Physician who basically told her to "Take 4 Tylenol and go to bed"

She did.  And felt fine several hours later.

Got us out of a $150 co-pay at the ER and god-knows how much insurance paperwork.

I spent the first two weeks of the cold ignoring it and maintaining my normal 24/7 work schedule hopped up on allergy meds and nyquil. Thats why i still have it, and now im dialed back.
Title: Re: 100 Pushups
Post by: charlie on August 27, 2009, 11:56:25 AM
There are reasons to go to the doctor. I'm not sure a cold or a headache are great reasons. If you have a primary doctor and insurance with a small co-pay, then you don't have to wait for the bone to come through skin to see one, though.

if you're sure its just a cold or virus then there's probably not much a doctor's gonna do for you.  But, that said, you still need to take care of yourself so you can get better.  Get some bed rest, drink plenty of fluids, etc.   Do some google research on when a cold isn't a cold.

If you think you have something like strep throat then you need to go to a doctor.  You don't need insurance.  Just go to a walk in clinic. It'll cost you a hundred bucks.  Maybe two hundred.  But that's actually a pretty good deal.

Think about it, schmucks like me pay that much every month just to have insurance coverage.  You get to pocket the money you earn and just pay for health care when you need it.  So long as you don't get cancer or end up in a bad car wreck, you're in a pretty good situation.

if you plan on working in this line for a while... you might want to look into setting yourself up with an HSA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_savings_account).  Instead of sending money off to an insurance company every month to cover premiums, sock it away tax free for when you need it.  Keep your own money but still be prepared for medical costs down the road.

Nail on the head...Move is going pretty well.  I'm mostly settled. I have to go and exchange my TV for a slightly larger one, rearrange a couple pictures, and get binders etc, but otherwise things are good - a trip to the bookstore and I'll be ready for class.

W3D1 was pretty good though - I did 10 extra at the end, I'll probably bump up to W3D3 on Tuesday - I dropped from 160 to 90 - a bit further than I wanted...

Gym indted. Dd chest then my nosy laughed at me when I tried pushups. I did 3 sets: 19, 6, 1. Poor form too.

I think what you just said is that you worked out at the gym, and because you worked your chest you could only manage 19 then 6 then 1 push up with poor form.

Is that right?

My wife is happy I'm doing this and seeing results, so she decided to try. Unfortunately, we wanted to do it together but trying to find time to do it together is difficult so I missed another week. Doh! We decided to them separately if we have to, so I'm back on track:

18-22-16-16-28

Note: That's 100 pushups total for the workout. :woot:

I never started but I really need too. Last night I was chasing a guy in grand rapids across rooftops (govt its the ghetto college ave area if u know it) and the last one was about 6 feet higher then the ones we were on. I was able to jump and pull myself right up, but the shape of the roof meant I had to push myself over onto it instead of just getting right up (hard to explain). I had a really hard time lifting myself over, it was basically a pushup with my legs hanging.

Now granted I'm 165. The vest is 15.5 pounds (btw I'm never using the 12lb metal shotgun plate ever again) and all the other misc gear is probably 2 lbs.

It's not really a lot, but I struggled with it. Still got the bastard, but pride is a little dented

Back on it...Trying to get back up to speed.  I restarted at Day 1, but I'm adding pushups to each rep until I'm tired...

12/1 - 30, 12, 7, 7, 35 = 91
12/7 - 10, 12, 15, 18, 15 = 70
12/14 - 16, 12, 17, 15, 30 = 98

Hang in there guys.  Ecstatic to hear yall are back at it - I haven't felt too sore yet - but I played a light game squash this morning beforehand, and I think I'm doing the crunches properly for the first time...I'm going to pay for this one tomorrow....

Pushups: W4D1 - 21, 29, 21, 21, 32 = 124 - A bit of a regression I just did the standard with only a couple extra, but it's all I had after squash...

situps: W2D2 - 21, 24, 18, 18, 26 = 107

Title: Re: 100 Pushups
Post by: charlie on January 25, 2010, 04:25:14 PM
Yes, the idea is that after completing the program, you might be able to do 100 pushups in a row, although I'm not sure that's really the "goal".
Title: Re: 100 Pushups
Post by: Govtcheez on January 25, 2010, 04:28:47 PM
So kermi's been doing this since august and did 40 in his last exhaustion test.  How long is this supposed to last?   Are you doing anything to augment the training (which is just pushups)?
Title: Re: 100 Pushups
Post by: charlie on January 25, 2010, 04:38:29 PM
It's supposed to be 6 weeks. I took three months and only made it to week 5, but part of that was missing a bunch of time.

Same thing with kermi, it's not like he's been doing it consistently, he stopped when he moved.
Title: Re: 100 Pushups

Title: Re: 100 Pushups
Post by: kermi3 on January 26, 2010, 12:14:47 AM
I'm on week 4 now - if I keep it up consistently, I think I can get there in another 4-5 weeks - last time when I started to get up there I maxed what I was capable of, and I needed more time and had to go back a couple of weeks before trying bigger sets - then I moved and reverted back to doing pushups once a week if I was lucky.  If I can keep it up every other day I'm hoping by March or April.

I'm not doing much else - playing squash, jogging...I've never really been a weight lifter, and I really don't like Columbia's lifting area.

This is my 3rd shot at it - I lost some data but the most I've got myself on record as doing is 45-50, but I think I did 60 once....Right now I've been sick and I'm level around 130 in 5 sets - but the programs catching up with me and should force me to go higher each day soon...

Took me a year but I finally started this up again in January. I went from 36 at the end of 2009 to 24 at the start of this year, then finished weeks 3 and 4 and got up to 37 on the exhaustion test. But after a month I stopped again. I guess I just can't get interested in week 5 and later.

I tried the situps exhaustion test and got 26. I tried the squats exhaustion test and stopped at 100 cuz I was bored.

Ya know I forgot all about this. Maybe I will do this alongside the p90x, because I really don't feel like my pushups are increasing like they should be with p90x.

I started out doing a horrible 3 standard pushups, no wide or military unless on my knees.

I'm on week four (missed a week) and I can do 7-8 standard, 5-7 military, and 7-8 wide back to back. But after that I'm spent.

Anything less than 25 for me is just not acceptable at all.

Swing by walmart. They sell grey interlocking gym pads, meant for workouts or to go under gym equipment, for like $6 and it's a pack of six. They are about an inch or two thick and pretty comfortable. I bought them for us and it is what we use. One side is super smooth (bottom) and the otherside is like a diamond plate pattern. I use them upside down but either way is comfortable.

On hardwood you may need to put a towel or something under them so they don't slide.

So I've been slacking in the pushup/sit-up department.  I never remember to do them at a good time....but I did just finish a great run.  Perfect day outside:

6.13 miles in 1:05 - 10:40/mile.  I stopped a few times - a three or 4 times to stretch, once to buy a Gatorade from a street vendor, and once or twice to breath/adjust my ipod, but overall it was a pretty continuous run!

My more recent runs have all been in colder weather and sub 3 miles.  The last time I went over 4 miles was 9/19/2010 (9:53/mile), and the last time I went over 6 miles was 4/12/2009!!!!  Back in 2009, my pace was a full 2min/mile faster...so I have some work today, but I'm VERY excited about this one!  Woohoo!

I'm not sure I've ever stopped a run to stretch before, seems weird.  Good job with the run, though!  Running is way better than pushups

Thanks!

I don't stop out of habit, but my shins and calf muscles were feeling very tight and painful, so I stopped to try to stretch them out some...worked....

Apparently my stops totaled 10 minutes - most were less than 10 seconds...the stretching and buying gatorade were the exceptions.  So dead now I don't even want to do hwk...

Running is way better than pushups

Not that this quote necessarily contradicts it, but didn't you say before that building muscle is more important than aerobic training?

I enjoy building muscle more than aerobic training, but I don't consider pushups a decent muscle building exercise, as I've said many times.

Going to try the pushups and situps in a bit...but for now:

Run: 4.5 miles, 10:18 pace.  1 quick stop at 1 mile to stretch, another 1 minute breather at the the second mile, then straight back....getting back into the flow.  I love spring.  A perfect day.

Okay....that really hurt.....

120 pushups (max 30 in 1 rep)

64 situps (max 15 in a rep)

Situps weren't so bad, but I finished with the pushups and I'm about dead....I need food and shower...

1 pushup is a rep, a group of reps is a set

I started doing my situps on the incline bench with a 25lb plate. I go all the way back, half way up then side-to-side, back down and then all the way up as one rep. I did three sets of five today, abs feelin good!

This is my third week at a new gym (campus gym at my fiances university, signed up here since I'm on her campus more often than my own). It's a nice gym, I've been playing a lot of squash there too.

just thought I'd chime in and say that I don't think I've done 100 pushups in my life.  Like aggregate.

NICE!  I haven't done this in forever...but my run times are getting better and better...this whole gym in my building thing is awesome.  Have you started doing the routine again?

My son and I just started this challenge.  I wasn't around when this happened before. We did our first day today.  Thanks Jen for resurrecting this thread.  :)

The pushup routine? No. My goals are not really related to doing as many pushups I can do.

Focusing more on barbell movements, pullups, and (at some point after my legs don't feel like they're going to die) running this year. Maybe cycling too. I'm supposed to sign up for the 5 Boro Bike Tour this afternoon.

I use fitocracy a lot more now.

Plus it's hard!  I've just started a plan to get me to a sub 50 10k.  I might do this or the situpson my off days.

I didn't keep it going.  Week 3 or 4 needs to start again next week.  I have a pain specialist meeting tomorrow.  I am all screwed up in general.  (back and leg)  Probably start physical therapy Tue/Thur next week for four weeks.

So, my daughter got into some poison oak and apparently gave me a hug when she got home or something, because I have poison oak now, too. Yay.

What does that have to do with this dormant thread? Well, the cure for poison oak is steroids. And while I know govtcheez doesn't consider pushups to be a muscle building exercise, that's what I've decided to do to take advantage of the extra testosterone in my system.

I might also go kill a deer with my bare hands later.

Where's your numbers?? :p

Normally my second day back after a long layoff is really hard. I was able to do the full workout this time with a good finish, though. Must be the 'roids. ;)
