I dunno what Nike has said about things, so it might be a tribute. But it's still an advertisement using a decidedly anticorporate band to promote a decidedly corporate product.
My big issue with this is that Ian Mackaye spent 20 years operating as an alternative to corporate music, and as a basic success story that you can play music on your own terms and generally live a happy life without comprimising your morals. Nike putting that picture on their web site basically says to potential customers that you can have integrity and devotion if you wear Nike shoes. (Not exactly "have", but the link between the two is there)
There's a shitload of stuff that Minor Threat and Ian Mackaye (lead singer) is known for:
- starting the straight-edge movement (no alcohol, smoking, drugs, or senseless fucking)
- being humble and focused on just making music
- not selling merchandise besides cd's and records
- selling cd's without any shipping and handling charge, for $10 each
- being inventive to cut touring costs
- doing concerts for $5
- operating dischord records on waste and recycled paper
- being vegan (a recent thing)
- producing bikini kill's first record (bikini kill is one of the first riot grrl groups)
- being on time for concerts
- being childhood friends with henry rollins, who became lead singer of black flag, a famous punk band (and who now acts as a vj on mtv)
Ian Mackaye did have an album cover with coca-cola advertisements back in his first band:
http://www.dischord.com/store?action=showRel&relNumber=100but this was more of a pro-nonalcoholic drink stance than a pro-coca-cola stance. And besides, that was his album cover to mess with.
