14ft garage door
« on: June 14, 2015, 04:10:24 PM »
Anyone have a 14ft garage door? Can you actually fit two cars in there? Seems like 16ft is the norm.

Dual doors.  Oh and belt drive.  The only way to go.

I never really pay attention to what I've had, but I'd guess it depends on what kind of car you have. Two Suburbans at 80in w/o mirrors might have some trouble, two FIATs at 64in would probably be no trouble, and two Passats at 72in would fit but not leave a ton of space for car doors.

Dual doors would be great, but we're buying an existing place and don't get to choose :(

We have a Santa fe and an elantra. I think they'd fit but I suspect it would be pretty tight. Would probably have to back one in to have the drivers doors on the outside.

So 144in combined width (source) without mirrors, leaves 2 feet total space for mirrors and maneuvering. But remember, you're not going to drive them through the door at the same time, so you can have a little more room for door opening as long as there's more space inside the garage than through the door.

I don't know if I'd do the back in thing, as there is more room for error there to either hit the other car or not take full advantage of available room.

I think the inside is 18 or possibly 18.5 feet, so there is some more room inside (if we were to rip out all of the shelving and benches that are installed). Our Santa Fe has a back up camera that makes aligning very easy when backing up, so it may not be so bad.

Anyway, we've decided the house is overpriced for what it offers, the small garage just being one of the downsides. The hunt continues...

Thanks for the input everyone!
