Insight into the book industry
« on: January 05, 2009, 01:15:15 AM »

Quite an interesting read about the mechanics of a book's success and the process of one house trying to retain market share.  Probably one of the few industries out there which operates almost exclusively on a "all or nothing" basis.  You can't imagine the auto industry taking as bigger risks by comparison.

I only read half the article as I'm busy getting ready for work...

I recall learning once that, with very few exceptions, publishers generally lose money on books when they first come out in hard cover.  The few that are mildly successful are then re-released in paperback where they turn enough profit to carry the weight of all the other books that failed.

The real money is in text books.

Very tongue-in-cheek ethic :)

>>publishers generally lose money on books when they first come out in hard cover<<

Yeah it's amazing how many of those suckers get pulped so soon after their release date.

Books should be free. Authors actually want their books to
be free because the more people that read them, the more
people that go to their book signings; and that's where the
real money is. The publishers are evil and screw them over
on the royalties; so we should pirate their books to show
those evil-doers a thing or two about the meaning of art!

Books should be about the words, man; not about the money.
Fucking sell-out authors who want to earn a living being

You kidding?  Sometimes I can't tell.

not to ruin the fun but, just so everyone knows, you can get free books and usually music and movies at you local library.  You just have to bring them back in a week or two when you're done.

Aye, there's the rub. "When I'm done" is usually more like a year or two.

What if I pirate all my books but when I earnestly try to go see my favorite authors' public readings, the venue is always sold out? I mean, I'm tryin' man. I just know I won't give those fatcats another cent.
