Yeah I'm getting a new PC.
It's ok.
Specs aren't _that_ great, but I'm upgrading it later this year.
Had to load £500 from my parents to get it...

3.0 GHz Pentium 4 (I really should find the FSB too)
512MB DDR400 RAM (upgrading this to 2/3GB VERY SOOD :D)
128MB nVidia GeForce 4
120GB HDD
17" CRT
Mouse
Keyboard
Speakers

Not entirely sure of the exact make of the GPU, but I don't really care, I won't be using it for games very much. There are a few things I want to upgrade besides RAM - the HDD being one of them. I'll use it for a lot of music and porn I mean general entertainment videos, so something big will be nice, say 250+ GB.

I do have a reason to upgrade the RAM if my thinking is correct: Would 512MB RAM be a bottleneck to a 3GHz CPU?

I think the amount of RAM you need depends pretty much on the software you are running. Of course, the type of RAM might matter (ie PC100 or PC133)

On my computer I've got 1GB RAM and a 3.4ghz P4 and I haven't had any problems running some of the newer games (Doom3, BF2)

Moved to Hardware... think about it next time.

Those are decent specs, but I'd push for a bigger CPU, personally.  And RAM isn't a bottleneck that much anymore.  Your HD is the only thing remaining that really is a bottleneck anymore, well, that and the BUS itself.

you can do that spec for a lot cheaper than 500 gbp - and dont bother about the gforce 4 go for one of the newer ones (are you going for a new MB as well - if so go for one supporting PCi express and get a pci express geforce board - they start pretty reasonably). Go onto ebuyer and look at the costs

Yeah, I'd also recommend getting a board with PCIX.  I did it this past winter and I'd do it again.  Intel board with a Geforce 6600 128mb PCIX card.  The card was only $120 USD and it runs all the latest games just fine.
