Simon Fox (celtic guitar)
« on: September 03, 2010, 02:26:58 PM »
I think I've posted about him before but I dropped by his website recently and say a new video listed. It also looks like he's got some instructional stuff available at playdadgad.com.

This is the song I heard to find out about him. I really like his Winter's Tale album.

Alternate tunings are awesome. I hardly play in standard tuning anymore. They make life so much easier. It's only frustrating trying to figure out what tuning a song is in when you're trying to learn it. Usually the ridiculous chord shapes and movements give away the fact that it's in another tuning. Then you just have to try the typical ones and see which one makes it easiest.

I call it cheating, but I wish I would've gotten into them earlier in my playing career. They open up so many more song possibilities.

And why didn't you just learn the song in DADGAD? It's not that hard to tune to. That's usually my "standard" tuning these days since I can easily get to open-d or drop-d from there.

I've always liked Chet's version better best.

I don't like alternate tunings at all.

No, you're not allowed anymore. You had your chance. Now be happy just playing in standard tuning. plth.

Just kidding. Welcome to the dark side of guitar playing.

Playing in open tunings is fun. Just start playing around, find where your octaves are etc.. it's pretty easy to stumble on to nice sounding chords. Look up a chord chart on line and you're off!
