how does it keep track of who is online at any given time? I never log out and I frequently just leave the window up for days, in fact, I'm technically on the site twice right now - I left the site up on my home computer when I left for work this morning - and now i'm at work.  Does it base it on a certain time frame from the last time you click a link?

There is an admin set amount of time to count users online.  Whenever you do something (besides doing the session keepalive action) it stores the time in the sessions database.  So it basically looks at how many different people have active sessions right then based on that time limit.
