Organizing your hard disk
« on: June 15, 2007, 11:52:42 AM »
I'm going through a late spring cleaning thing where I'm doing backups and junk of my systems. I've come to realize I've got data thrown across so many partitions and backups that I have no idea where stuff actually is.
I've been searching and reading various methods of organizing your hard disk but I was wondering what folks around here do.
Is it all thrown into one big monster folder or do you guys have "creative" organizational ideas?
Now that I have a big monster backup drive I have to organize my files better so I can make good use of it, and my DL DVD burner.

I have 5 partitions on my desktop not counting my external HD.

Those 5 partitions are split across 2 drives and they all have their own function.

1 - Productivity software/Windows
2 - Games
3 - Backups
4 - Music/Videos
5 - Pictures/Random data

My backup drive is kind of a mess as I just have a few folders (my documents, drivers, pictures, music, etc).

I don't think it's all that creative... I just like to keep genres of programs/files seperated.

I tend to organize by

Media - Music, Photos, Movies, Misc

Data - People, Browsers, Email/Contacts, Career, Recipes, My Resume Misc

Work - This should vary according to your career.  I keep my resume here and in data.

Gaming - Foldered by game name.  Sub folders include patches, mods, etc.

Applications and Utilities - Foldered by name.  Sub folders might include, OSes, patches, utilities, etc.

I think I have a few others but I cannot access them now.

Hope this helps!

Basically the same.

I prefer about 2-6 subfolders per folder, and I generally don't like having files and folders together under another folder. This ends up being a deeply nested hierarchy, but with short but clear names it tends to work well. Then I come up with shortcuts to my most commonly used deeply nested folders.

My external HD has folders for Books, Porn, MP3s, and Shared.  Beyond that everything's pretty much scattered through 3 HDs
