Ubuntu
« on: December 16, 2009, 09:41:24 AM »
So I bit the bullet and got a netbook - even though I had conviced myself that I didn't need one - but I am a sucker for impusle purchases.

It'll come with Vista Home Basic installed and I've heard that Vista, for lack of a better term, is a piece of shit.

So I was pondering installing Ubuntu on it.  Been reading up on Ubuntu and it seems like it's pretty good and they even have a distro for netbooks.

So for you more experienced ubuntu/Linix geeks, should I do this?  Should I go full Ubuntu or the "netbook" distro?

Should I go for full Linix or a dual boot with a tiny Vista partition just in case. . .?

Vista really isn't that bad.  They've worked all (most) of the kinks out and it really isn't a bad OS at this point.  Then again, it is a resource hog and Ubuntu may be a bit more lightweight for a resource-lacking machine like a netbook.

That's what a lot of people were saying about running vista on the netbook - that it will hog up the resources and that it works better running XP, Win 7 or Linix.

I don't want to pay for XP or 7 . . .

No Win 7 yet?  Do you use Visa SP3?

I haven't used either in a desktop/laptop environment.  I like FreeBSD in a server environment a lot more then Ubuntu.

Yeah - since I'm a few years from hosting my porn website, don't think I'll go FreeBSD.

Although I may look at it as an option.  I glanced at the website and wasn't excited about it.  I judge a lot of things at face value :p

So I got the netbook, started it  up and did all the set-up.  Deleted some programs I don't need, then restarted.  And it took 58 seconds for Vista to go through it's motions before I can log-in.

Unacceptable!

Even my 3 or 4 year old MacBook doesn't even take that long!

Will definitely be putting Linux on this bitch (I'm using it right now).

If you're interested, this is what I got: http://www.gateway.com/programs/ltseries/index.php

So I did a test. I restarted the netbook randomly 3 times. Here are the results:
1:03
0:56
0:53

Not amused.

That's one of my options: XP, 7, or Linux.

Since I really don't want to pay for either XP or 7, I'm leaning more towards Linux
