Title: to invite or not to invite...
Post by: ober on April 11, 2005, 11:43:52 AM
Do we make a post at cprog about our new home inviting whomever desires to post and enjoy our company.... or do we keep to ourselves and avoid the 12-year-old scene?

Yes, invite definitely. We need members to grow and flourish IMHO.

Might be polite to PM Kermi3 before we post an open invite...

what if we start with selective invitations.  then the general invitations can go out.

of course, with increase activities runs a greater risk for mod action (then i can take bets on who the first vicitim of the banhammer will be)

Too late!   :(

I thought about doing that... but hell, kermi has been a member of this group, if he has a problem with it, he can PM me or whatever.

Hey Rob, are you really programming in smalltalk now? how do you like it, and what IDE are you using?

Well, I haven't been there, so that's a given. :suave: But I get the feeling I missed a lot of good stuff. Care to fill me in?

Yep. After too many years I decided to study for a degree part time. My first course is Computing: An Object Oriented approach. The IDE is one specific to the OU (http://www.open.ac.uk (http://www.open.ac.uk) ), but it's based on LearningWorks. Any Smalltalk assistannce gratefully received!

I'm not sure how much I like it yet, I'm still trying to hold on tight! VB & 8051 assembler for work and Smalltalk for studying do not a good mix make!

I use the cincom visual works IDE....it's pretty dcent, but I really hate the language. It is great for the OO concepts, but other then that, I hope I never have to use it again. I'm also taking an OO course: OO languages and Environmnets; advanced topics in smalltalk and c++

Second, thanks ober for invitation posted on cboard.

I think I'm not programming beginner any more, but I hope I'll learn a lot from you guys and I'll drink to that.

Cheers!

Hey Micko... welcome aboard.  Besides programming, there is a wealth of knowlege here on a variety of different subjects... and as a plus, we all really like just talking to each other.

I do hope you stick around.  Should be a really good time.

The only thing you'll learn here is how to be a nut case.

Scratch that. You'll also learn that people you looked up to and thought were mentally stable are actually certifiable.

I'm not beginner at C and C++ programming languages, but I'm at everything else.
Currently, I'm in the Netherlands, working on my diploma thesis and have cable connection here, so I'll stick around for at least two more weeks. And then go back to good old dial-up!

didnt realise we have moved as i've been on hols then been ill etc etc (and no-one missed me ::sob sob::)

(hey robr am thinking of doing some of the OU computer courses as i'm doing the math degree but a bit bored with just one course a year - what are they like - got my first 2 tma results back for my m203 - pure maths course - the first tma went missing in the post and i had to rewrite and the second took 10 days to get there - royal mail (hah))

It's an IRC command used for depicting actions:
Quote

op pleez
lilbill: Done! Hit alt+f4 to confirm your new status.
* lilbill quit (Connection reset by peer)
* Tamanohikari dies laughing

It adds a level of realism to the verbal abuse.

Hi Bassy :) . Never assume no-one missed you... The Smalltalk course is fine, if a bit, er, how do I put this politely, pedantic. Not sure I could manage more than 60 points a year though!! How come you don't send your TMA's electronically? I got my last one back in 5 days or so. 94%!! *polishes nails*

Good to see you here.
