Hi there,
in a few days I'll be receving our new server. It should be located right under my desk, next to my computer. But I don't want to have another set of monitor, mouse and keyboard. So I was thinking of just getting a KVM thingy.

Is there any reason why I should not be using one?

Cheers,

me, the one with the questions

No reason not to.  They're great for that situation.

OK, I'll order one then and blame you if anything goes wrong ;)

Thank you!

LOL... we use them here in our test cells that only have 1 monitor but 2 PCs.  We also used them at my old job in the server room (although that was a grander scale... that KVM switched between like 15 servers).

Only problem I've had with mine (Belkin Omni 4-port) is that it doesn't like my laptop, but other than that hotkey switching rocks.

Well, I bought one for a friend about a year ago and he's happy with it.

I was just a bit ... reserved ... becuase of the server thing.

Rob, doesn't Belkin make one specifically to share a laptop and a PC?

I've got an old KVM. I used it a lot but I don't really use it much anymore. I use VNC now, my PCs are all in different rooms
If you do get a KVM see if you can get one of the networked ones. Then, if you ever decide to move your PC somewhere else you don't need really long cords.
