Well, this isn't really about web design but its a question for the web designers... so :robot:

I tried making a splash screen for my gmail notification app. Im not exactly good at this type of thing (banners/logos/icons/splash-screens). Suggestions?

Here's a suggestion: don't.

Splash screens are major annoyances and only delay your users in getting to the content they want.  Don't use one and put your efforts into making a nice banner.

This is for a toolbar application though, there is no main window. The widget toolkit im using (SWT) requires a window to be opened before the toolbar icon can be used (the toolbar icon needs a parent window). So, basically, I have to open a window.. i figured making it a splash screen is better than just a blank grey box (which it was before)

Maybe it's too early in the morning, but wouldn't this qualify as a non-Web design programming topic?

I saw "Splash Screen" in Web development and thought about stupid Flash intros.
Reduced fat and now 100% pot free, but same great okay taste.
