By the end of his life, he couldn't hear anything. Not even
conversations. He wrote by feeling the vibrations of the
piano.

He want deaf around 31 IIRC. He cut the legs off of his piano so he could put his ear on the floor and hear the vibrations that way.

tsk tsk.  nope, most deaf people can speak.  most of them don't b/c they don't like the way they sound (not a joke, but that's the way it was explained to me, they can "hear" the vibrations from their voice).
