Learning Guitar
« on: April 13, 2007, 03:19:59 PM »
Ok, i have been playing for about 2 months consistently, and i still really suck. My biggest problem is my finger dexterity. I have to hold my hand in some really wacky ways in order to get the stretch or bend i need, and i often end up causing dead strings because of it. I'm looking for some suggestions to DVD's i can download and what not to learn a little better. I only know a couple chords (A, E, G, C) and i havent done any scales.

I cant really even play any full songs (only 2 lol), just some tidbits. For example;

Full songs:

Stone Sour - Through Glass
Black Lab - This night

I can play most of:

The Scorpions - Rock you (like a hurricane)
Chris Daughtry - Home (Acoustic)
Nickleback - Far Away (not at full speed, tho)

I have a nice guitar, amp, and pedal, but i just suck lol. Look at this pic of me playing, and you can probably find more than a few things wrong. It's late in this pic, but still.

hey ethic if you and i were both courting lily allen..... oh wait, which one of us has a relationship that lasted more than the bus ride home?

Dude, ethic I'm sorry but you can't win a cool guitar playing picture contest playing a Martin Backpacker.

If you're going to own a travel guitar it should be a Go-Guitar.

I don't have many pictures of me playing guitar, but here's one from a few years back playing one of my dad's guitars (since has been sold).

Me with my 12 string:

And for Senior Douche's playing question:

Google Video baby. I've found all sorts of instructional guitar videos on there (some quite good).
I also use Netflix for various DVDs.

I'll check them out :)

I'm pretty happy with my guitar. My grandfather picked mine up and went to town, then picked up my dads and went for it and you really cant tell the difference. I know mine is made by gibson as well, but im really suprised with the level of quality they put into their epiphones.

I stumbled upon this site while looking for a picking pattern I had a bass player show me once, he called it the spider and it was basically an alternating finger scale sort of thing. Good for mindless dexterity work.

Major scales up and down the neck work great too to improve speed and stretch.

Haha, stealth, I never had a picture of me with a guitar until last night.

Rob, imagine me playing that guitar at age 12. :)  Here's a more "balanced" picture.
