I picked up this Blindness by Jose Saramago (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0156007754/sr=8-2/qid=1149649301/ref=pd_bbs_2/103-8468075-2394247?%5Fencoding=UTF8), a Portuguese writer, a few days ago. It is freagin really good. And contemporary too! Saramago started writing very late in his life (I believe in his 60) and in '98 he was awarded the Nobel prize for literature.
I haven't finished it yet, and I wont rate it till I'm done - but so far I highly recommend giving this one a try.
