Cases, PSU, and Cooling oh my
« on: January 25, 2006, 04:22:05 PM »
I'm currently deciding on parts for a new computer, I don't want SLI so that's not comming into play.  I also got a dvd burner for christmas which is going into this computer.  However I really have no clue what to do about a case, psu and any cooling above stock.  I also have a budget of $1500

ASUS A8N-E Socket 939
XFX PVT70FUND7 Geforce 7800GTX
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Toledo
Crucial Ballistix 1GB (2 x 512MB)
Seagate Barracuda  7200 RPM SATA  Hard Drive (x2 raid for raid)
LG Beige IDE CD Burner (for coppying cd's)

PSU: http://www.pcpowercooling.com/home/
    - I recommend the Turbo-cool 510 Deluxe if you can afford it, or the 470 Silencer if you can't.

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811129154&ATT=11-129-154&CMP=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r
     - Antec P180 - excellent reviews, and a friend of mine has it and loves it

Above stock Air cooling: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118223
    - Great reviews, excellent cooling

Thanks ober I'm definitly going with your idea for air cooling.  The case is cool but I think a door would annoy me more then anything.  Plus I would like to spend less then $100 unless the case is going to give me a preformence boost.  The psu's are not what I'm looking for as I need they are 24 pin connector boards.  The one is for a 20 pin and I think the other has an adapter to go from 20 to 24 but I would rather avoid that.

AFAIK, both have a 24 pin adapter, and there really should be no issue using the adapter.  But as long as you find a decent PSU that has 22-26 A on the 12 volt rail, you should be fine... that's up to you.

The main reason I recommend the P180 is because the PSU is kept in the bottom of the case in a seperate compartment.  A friend of mine just bought one a few months ago and just by using the case, he noticed a 7-10 °F drop in CPU and case temps.  If nothing else, you'll need the additional cooling with a processor like that.

EDIT: And if you're avoiding a case because of the door... WHY?  How many times do you open the door?  Is it really going to be that annoying?

From the reviews I've seen the case has got it does seem to be worth the price.  As long as I keep my computer on the left side the door should pose no annoyincess.  and I can keep it open on the side if I have to switch a bunch of cd's.  I'm going to add it to my list

Yes, and since the computer is going to travel to and from school a few time a year I decided since I don't over clock it's not worth the risk.

Roger, figured id ask because with that nice large budget....yea we could have fun : ) If its going to travel why not customize a nice laptop? I never thought i would see the day i could actually have a laptop as my gaming/everything pc, and i was wrong. Best thing i ever bought!

I'm also looking for a laptop, as it stands now for use in class and for going home on breaks I take the train as opposed to a car.

However as I probbley won't get another desktop  until after collage I want something pretty powerful.

a HP laptop that will do everything you need and then some will only run ya bout 900-1000 with rebates and deals. I always reccomend HP when it comes to laptops, then Dell, then Emachines. My dads HP has never had any issues, mine runs great, and my buddies runs awsome as well. Definitly something to consider.
